So why is there a profanity filter on a M rated game's website?

T4R. That's like having a children' board on 4chan.

What is it exactly that the OP, and those that wish to remove/limit the filter really want? What is it they are thinking will be achieved by allowing these words to be seen?
I don't think getting rid of the filter entirely is a good idea. But some words in the filter aren't profane, like "LGBT" (fully spelled out). I get that these words can be used as insults. But so can any other label. If we're going to block words because they can be used as insults, let's block: Idiot, feminist, liberal, coolmike699, conservative, stupid, and every other word that is often used to insult someone.
lol ur such a coolmike Then it comes down to a matter of oppressive words. There's that one word we all know about, and it was used to break down and hold a minority below the quality of the majority. The same can be said about the LGBT, even though that isn't fair. Just like the word retarded, the words you spoke about can be used to insult a person, but usage in this way is unkind not only to the person you are insulting, but more so insulting the group that these words actually apply to. All racial slurs are filtered, so it makes sense that any possible secksual slur is filtered too, as well as the actual words, because, they can be unfairly used as an insult. Just as Recon said, there are plenty of dogs who would gladly walk along without tugging at the leash, but because there are those few that have to tug, we must all be put on a leash.
Filtering out 'the g word' so it can't be used as an insult is like filtering out the word 'black' for the same reason. It's not like putting the dog on a leash, it's like locking it in the basement. Clearly some control is required, but taking it to extremes is pointless and doesn't do anything.
You're missing the point. People don't use "black" as an insult, but there are some who use the "g word" as an insult, which is not only offensive to the individual, it is also an insult to that community (the homosecksuals). We are on the leash that is the filter because there are those that would use this term in an insulting way. In just the same way they would use the N word offensively, and many other of these sorts of words.
