I'm sure I'm not the only one that wishes Jones would show up for interviews more, I think of him as a silent watcher making sure his imagination for projects is coming to live. Great write up. It's completely different when you're shaping the world of a new universe with a single gun (or any decision). Not only that, assuming he makes a "mistake" that we won't know about another decade from now when we're on something new, with the technology available now, I wonder if the availability of title updates would be the biggest auto correct for Destiny's ambitions through Jones. More like "Well, it seemed good in the studio, but people aren't using this weapon/element like we expected, so lets change it to fit their needs better." If Jones was to travel back 10 years knowing what he knows now and overseeing the development of Halo, it would be a completely different game. Which is why I'm more excited to see what Destiny is capable of. We've heard a couple times that Destiny was an old idea of a game they wanted to create, but they've been waiting for the technology to take form. Now that it's here, Jones gets the full team on board and (hopefully) makes the call to some right decisions. We'll find out soon. Great write up Tom.

  • Bungie have been amazing, in regards to keeping games updated, so good in fact that it almost discredited them during Halo Reach. The megalo custom script engine, which Bungie build themselves, allowed all sorts of Halo Reach options to be tweaked, without any need for a title update at all. To the less aware, it appeared that Bungie were not updating their game, when in fact dozens of fixes were deployed on a monthly basis. My concern with Destiny is its short release cycles. This might mean that changes are reserved for the next title, rather than deployed as game fixes. I very much hope this is not the case, and that Bungie work to perfect each title, as needed. The fact that Jones is even now considering issues with Halo CE is a promising sign.

  • So perhaps with their new scripting, they can implement minor changes near instantly. However, bigger stuff will be held off for the next release rather than a large TU, thus focusing their efforts on shipping a good game? I like the sound of that.

    Thank you, Spawn! It is strange. I find myself in two minds about the prospect of Jones having more interview appearances. On the one hand, he is highly fascinating guy, and I would certainly like him to elaborate on the Halo 2 ending. On the other, I wonder whether the same logic he applies to game design can be applied to his aversion to media appearances. I mean to say that being detached from the spotlight ensures he keeps perspective on what matters. That is, his passion for making great games, as opposed to selling them.
