I don't know what to say about that article. You pulled apart a personal interview like you would pull apart a new picture or footage from Destiny, and I find that to be really weird. Like, I feel that's how conspiracies and witch-hunts get started, and I don't know how to feel about it. I know, in the end, you made it positive, and you cited sources from your quotes, but... I just don't know, man.

  • I kind of know what your saying, its a good read though. I think because he's trying to give an opinion on someones words, which is a little more indeterminate and personal than gameplay and images, which is what we're used to seeing scrutinised on here, it can throw you off a bit. He makes some good points, but don't read it like he's critiquing gameplay.

  • Yeah, you're right, it does most certainly take you out of the typical loop coming form this topic, however would it be proper to just say "reasons why I love Jason Jones" (Title can change, of course) rather than a title that sounds like it focuses on what the interview was about?

  • I'm not sure I get your complaint. The interview isn't anything like most witch-hunt speculation, it's just going over the Jason Jones interview with some additional commentary.

  • That's the thing, it's not a complaint. You made your points clear and it was a good article. I guess I am confused as to why the extra depth into the interview.

  • No I think I understand what you're saying it was unnecessary to delve deeper when it was more of an interview about him. It was very simply put Jason Jones revealing how he feels about what he does, not a easter egg sorta thing like the "E3 behind the scenes" artist thing.

Granted, the interview gave insight into the man's character. Humble, with a self-deprecating humour, characteristic of introspective, quieter types. He is certainly a man that inspires mutual trust and respect, and his personality has no doubt shielded him from developing a creativity-crippling ego. But I didn't focus so much on that. The interview went much deeper, and that was my focus. It was more than: " very simply put Jason Jones revealing how he feels about what he does" It was talking about the fundamental philosophies of Bungie. There was a lot of important insights to be drawn from it, particularly regarding game design, and creating an ideal work environment.

  • Yeah, partially that, but I think what is also bugging me is the fact that this is Jason's first interview in a long time, and people are now critiquing what he's saying, like a fact check, but way less political.

Sorry, but I resent the negative implication of critique. Jason Jones is a fascinating guy, who I respect a great deal. I felt a response like "Jason Jones is awesome", did not do him justice. With Jones there is no jumping on the hype train. No nonsense. Just a man absolutely dedicated to his people and his passions. I admire him immensely for keeping himself so grounded, in light of Halo's ground-breaking success; I admire his boldness and vision; and I admire the culture of trust, respect, and creativity at Bungie. His interview gave me an awful lot of faith in Bungie's upcoming project, and in Bungie as a company. I wanted to share that feeling, and draw out the significance of what was said over the interview. As I said, it is exciting.

It's a pity that the word critique has garnered negative connotations, when at it's best it's a useful, analytical and constructive engagement with a subject. This is exactly what you have attempted to do in your article and it is something that needed pointing out. There is plenty of insight beyond what Jason Jones actually said in that interview and your delving actually serves to highlight that. Oftentimes people need a nudge to look beyond the superficial. That's what you have done. Good article.
It was talking about the fundamental philosophies of Bungie. There was a lot of important insights to be drawn from it, particularly regarding game design, and creating an ideal work environment.
This is how I felt about the revelation that he engages in development of full-blown projects (not side ones) just to test ideas and mechanics, to understand concepts.
