I pay for my internet. Therefor I will decide what content I allow to get through.

  • Please read my discussions with others in the threads as to why that thinking is just plain wrong.

  • You are false. I am well within my rights to disallow certain content to enter my home network. And to modify all client side data that is sent out. That is my choice. Websites are well within their right to not allow me to use their website if I am running adblock. That is their choice. /Thread

  • They are within their rights to block you because you aren't within yours to block content on their site. Get it now?

  • Legally, I can control what content I allow to enter my computer. No legal action can be brought against me for disallowing / modifying local content. Therefor I am within my rights using adblocker. They are within their rights to block me, and can do so if they choose. /Thread.

  • Legally you can use adblocker, sure. But it doesn't change the fact you have no rights to block content on a website. If you had the right to block the content, then they wouldn't have the right to block your access based on you blocking their advertisements. The majority of content on websites is inherently free because of ads, all the sites ask in return is that you put up with them. There are sites that go too far with ads, sure, but the majority of reputable sites with strong user bases respect the fact that people don't want ads popping up and blaring sound through their speakers, so they are very selective with which ads get shown. Ad blocker circumvents an understanding between web users and content creators that shouldn't have to be protected or enforced by laws, but thanks to Ad blocker most people have forgotten it.

  • Don't you think it's just a BIT silly to say "/Thread" or "Discussion over" after every single post and then keep coming back to reply?

  • How so? It's only legal to use it because there's no legislation protecting advertising on the internet. I doubt anyone ever thought they'd need it. However, it's problems like the one we are facing with Ad Blocker that cause legislation to be drafted in the first place. If web users as a whole decided to not use Ad Blocker and instead told sites what kind of ads they were willing to put up with, it wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately, those who feel they are entitled, such as yourself, will always exist.

  • What he's trying to say is that you're acting a fool. The logic of "I pay for my internet so I choose what I see and should still be able to access websites" is rather stupid, no? People pay for cable, yet they are still subjected to commercials. Hopefully most, if not all, require adblockers to be disabled at some point in the future, or require a monthly fee to block ads for you.

  • The one where companies make money at our expense? We see it, we just don't like it so we find a way around it.

  • Don't all companies make money at your expense? A good example; It costs a shoe company less than 4 bucks to make a pair of shoes. They charge you, let's say 60.... Manufacture Cost Vs Wholesale Vs Retail is ridiculous.

  •
It costs a shoe company less than 4 bucks to make a pair of shoes. They charge you, let's say 60....
Sure, and it's shameful. But at least it's a product, and you can choose whether or not you want to buy it. An ad is forced on you whether you like it or not.

  • It's a website, you can choose whether or not you want to view it. If you just HAVE to see the site, kind of like you HAVE to own the shoes, you just need to eat the cost and pay- either with your money or your time.

Nope. That analogy is false. Why? Because an ad is forced on you. I can choose whether or not to buy some shoes. I can also choose to view a webpage that shamelessly forces ads on you and block them.
or your time.
No one has the right to waste your time. Currency is one thing, but to force you to waste your time is wrong and I won't allow it.

  • You can choose whether or not to view the ad, can't you? Click the X on the ad, click the X on the tab. You're telling me that walking into a shoe store and deeming every pair too expensive isn't a waste of your time? How about taking the time to read the price tag?

  •
You can choose whether or not to view the ad, can't you? Click the X on the ad, click the X on the tab.
You just contradicted yourself. I have to see the ad if I have to close it.
You're telling me that walking into a shoe store and deeming every pair too expensive isn't a waste of your time? How about taking the time to read the price tag?
What the hell are you even talking about? I choose to read the price tag, the shoemaker doesn't hold my family at gun point and force me to read the price tag.

  • Watching Shark Tank on ABC is a good way to learn about profit margins, even in start ups. The companies the sharks tend to gobble up right away are the start ups with high profit margins.

  • Making money at your expense? Really? Would you visit a tenth of the websites you do now if you had to pay to access them with cold hard cash? No? Didn't think so.

  •
Making money at your expense? Really?
Yes, making money at my expense. Are you blind? Ads that freeze my computer on "respectable" websites are making money at my expense. Understand now? Go ahead and bend over and get -blam!-ed up the ass if you like, but I don't swing that way.
