Has anyone been caught in a bizzare moment where normalcy seems to have been shoved out the nearest window?
I was once visiting a preserved military battleground from the civil war near Highland Falls in New York during the winter (it was closed, but they didn't do a very good job securing it). It had been snowing interminably for the past few days, and everything was covered in a thick blanket of snow - there was nothing there except monuments half-buried in snow, the frozen Hudson to one side about 80 metres off a perilous drop and an endless expanse of white all around. No sounds either, 'twas eerie, although you'd have to experience the quiet for yourself to appreciate how strange it was.

One time I was having a slash. The only light on in the whole house was the one in the bathroom, and it was deathly quiet. Then, the light decides to turn off and leave a loud hissing noise running through the place. Needless to say, I was startled and it took me a few moments to realize what had happened.

Standing outside at night tends to do that to me, if I stay out long enough. Same with driving at night.
