The absolute final verdict on pets.

Many people, as you all know, have been asking about some "controversial" topics in relation to Destiny, ranging from cat ears to pets. While I have nothing to say on the subject of...cat ears...I want to provide closure on the subject of the pets with my own two cents on the matter. To start with, I keep seeing people saying that Bungie is trying to make Destiny "unique" and that introducing pets will somehow make the game "less unique." Answer me this: What in the hell was UNIQUE about Destiny's gameplay? I'll answer that for you: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! It's the same old FPS gameplay; aim and shoot; sprint and slide, only this time, with loot on the side. But that's OKAY, because shooters nowadays are NOT carried by their gameplay; they're carried by their setting, lore, story, and universe. This is why we have such great story-driven shooters like Metro, Halo, Bioshock, Fallout, Crysis... In my eyes, having something like pets for the Hunter class would make the gameplay a little more interesting, but more importantly, help flesh out the uniqueness of the SETTING a bit more. Think about it: pets being in the game would create a drive for Bungie to create and flesh out more wildlife species for the Hunters to tame! C'mon, people. Destiny is going to be a FANTASY SCI-FI universe! You can just IMAGINE the potential of awesome unique creatures to tame in a universe like this. These creatures, whose creation was driven by the Hunters' ability to have pets, would subsequently add more diversity and depth to Destiny's universe as well. Each player would have a favorite creature they'd want to tame, effectively adding MORE uniqueness and diversity to your characters. So, to conclude, YES. Pets in Destiny would work, and would be an increase in nearly EVERY category of Destiny; gameplay, setting, story... contrary to the cancerous popular belief, there would be NO drawbacks to having pets in this game. I'm not exactly holding my breath, as it's unfortunately unlikely that pets will be seen on the Hunter's class page (at least for the first game), but there would be no problems if they were. And we can always look to the future sequels for either a "beast master" class to be added, or for the pets being added for Hunters.

    • No. Pets would get in the way. Alien animals on the terraformed planets would be super cool to see, like the moa in Reach, but not to tame and pet. There is no story element pertinent to the main game through obtaining a pet, and no AI has ever been so good to keep your pet from giving away your position before you were ready. Also, remember you have a Ghost. Why not consider that your "pet" while we consider it our tool, just like the dog in CoD. If you can customize the Ghost, I'd say there's your pet answer, without the need for "taming" animals (how the heck would you even do that... Croc Dundee it into submission? Feed it food? Play a Kenny G. Solo?).

    • Not to be a jerk but.... I agree pets would absolutely make Destiny unique because no other game with RPG/FPS/RTS/TPS/MMO elements have pets. CoD doesn't have dog care packages. CoD Ghosts wont have motion captured dogs that "you actually care about." Borderlands didnt have Bloodwing or Deathmachine. Fallout didnt have dogs. Skyrim didnt have dogs. Fable didnt have dogs. Blacklight didnt have pets. No head crabs or robodogs in Half Life. No Rush in Megaman. Dead to Rights didnt have Shadow. Mario didnt have Yoshi. Zelda certaintly didnt have Epona to get him from A to B. You couldn't breed Chocobos in Final Fantasy 7 or various monsters in Final Fantasy Tactics. Wow and Guildwars certainly didn't have both useful pet allies and completely worthless vanity pets with ridiculous price tags. There isnt a game based entirely around the premiss that you're a god getting a giant pet to do your bidding. Pokemon isnt a game about collecting every freaking pet available and fighting other peoples pets. In fact... Your argument is invalid. If you want a pet go play one of those games. Or at least come up with a better argument. The whole "Destiny as a first person shooter is so boring. No unique seamless matchmaking system. No unique methods of character development. No unique immersive storyline. fing PETS is something that would make this game standout amongst all of its peers,' argument is pretty weak.

      • I'd be ok if the pet only added aesthetics but didn't attack or anything. I find it annoying in those games with pets, and the pets are used to attack while everyone just sits around and watches. It takes away from the game for me.

      • No no no. First off, it doesn't make sense. It is a freakin FPS. Second, why do I need a dog, when I am fighting in SPACE. Dogs can't go in SPACE. Third, it just doesn't make sense. O look, a guy with a dog, *fires two bullets* dog dies. Well that was a waste of development time, seeing as it added nothing to the game.

        • I hate the idea of pets in shooters (unless it's something temporary like turrets or security bots like in Bioshock). Hunters are rogues, they're survivalists. Having to take care of Mr. Poodles while killing baddies would make me cry. Just because the class is called "Hunter," doesn't mean we need pets. Unless it's supposed to be like CoD: Ghosts, where we are ELITE stealth fighters who are accompanied by that animal that's notorious for keeping the neighbors up at night.

        • Forgive me if I'm wrong but aren't the Ghost's everyone's personal "pet"? Joe Staten actually said, with his own mouth... that the ghosts will have many different customisations... Maybe part of the customisation will be the shape of the ghost. Instead of a Guilty spark looking electro-ball, there may be one that looks like Ravage from transformers, or laserbeak. Then all of you people that are for the pets, will get what you want... And the people that are happy with a giant floating metal testicle with the voice of Tyrion Lannister will also be happy.

        • Sometimes a little less can be more in the long run. Adding pets in the mix just adds on making the game appear that it's trying so harf to please everyone when everyone should be reminded about the narrative of the story. REMEMBER people, you are the guardian, your journey with friends, guns and loot. Want a companion stick with the kick ass Ghost. Want a furry friend? Adopt a pet or use google to your hearts content. Cmon people, a tiger would be cool but NOT necessary at all. I find little kids tend to push for the whole pet thing rather than mature gamers. Idk my take on things.

        • Can a pet outrun bullets? ...Last time I checked, no, they couldn't. They will serve no useful purpose in this game, get over it.

            • Yes, Destiny is trying to make a unique game. Can you imagine? Walking into battlefield with a massive bear/elephant hybrid (Imagination!) The pets could be customizable, have their own tab right next to the players and could also have armour, traits and other cool things. Since the animal is fully grown, it can most likely feed itself! Come on guys...I just thought of that off of the top of my head...be creative!
