Im sure that the ships will probably just be your "home room" where you can stash your stuff in between matches. Bungie isnt trying to make a space shooter game. Ships will simply be your home and the base of means to select destinations to travel from one world to the next.
They may make ships controllable in future games, but not this time.
At the end of the day, who cares?

I'm hoping they do, in the future, make ships controllable. Especially given the length of the project, I am almost certain it will happen at some point. Even if, for the time being, they are focusing on the core gameplay, at some point they are going to have the system down and it will be awesome. Then what? There are three sequels to this HUGE game! They've got to have some kind of counter invasion or something in space ships. We all know Bungie is going to do an awesome job, so you're right in that we don't really need to worry about it.

Yeah you're probably right. Similar to how the ships in Star Wars the Old Republic work minus the space combat missions. But if they could pull it off, flying the saber in Halo Reach was one of my favorite parts of the game. :)
