I'm getting my Wisdom Teeth cut out soon. :(

I'm scared. Have you had yours taken out? Did they knock you out? How did you deal with the pain?

  • I had them taken out. The worst part was the gas. I was half asleep and felt like I was dying, and then they shoved needles into my arms. I woke up in a chair with two bloody tissues in my mouth, right where my wisdom teeth used to be, and I couldn't feel my lower jaw at all thanks to the anesthetics they used. Everything was okay the next day though. The sides of my mouth had indents where the teeth used to be, but other than that everything was fine. Just remember to eat only soft foods for a bit after, like pudding. Or ice cream. At least now you have a good reason for poor eating habits.

  • My experience was fine. I got laughing gas and novocaine, they didn't put me under. It was very quick. A couple short yanks, that felt like someone slowly but firmly pressing on my lower jaw. No pain. Afterwards, I drove myself to the pharmacy, and then home.

  • Mine are out. Some people get put under I wasn't. They just numbed the area and yanked them all out. You're gonna be spitting out a whole lot of blood and it's gonna hurt for a few days.

  • I have to get all 4 removed at the same time. While being a pretty severe hemophiliac. So don't despair, there's always someone who's off worse than you are.

  • Well lets see, I had 2 of them removed at once. Both where impacted (growing sideways into another tooth) and both were infected. I wasnt knocked out, only got Novocaine, ended up actually falling asleep while they were being removed. If you only get Novocaine, the moment you cant feel it anymore ask for one more shot really helps. The pain afterwards wasnt bad you get medication and that helps.

  • When I was stationed in Germany, the army made me get my wisdom teeth out. I got two shots of Novocain and that's it. I was awake and felt the ENTIRE thing, and it wasn't AS bad as I had thought it would be. but it still sucked horribly

  • Mine sucked cause after about 8 hours the bleeding slowed but my body didn't like pain medication and I had nausea and vomited up blood that was draining when I was lying down and yogurt and didn't sleep the first night. I had gotten all 4 out too. After that I just ignored the pain and healed fine over the next couple days. It was over spring break last year when I was a sophomore. I

  • Yes, last summer. Don't worry it's not the pain. It will be difficult to eat anything a few days after though.

  • Mine seem to have started coming through but they're not painful and I hope they never need to come out. I am seriously terrified of having my teeth out after having a few out. My roots are -blam!-ing massive and hook shaped. Plus the sedatives took an hour to work on me when I went... after 7 injections of them, adult doses. If I need my wisdom teeth out at any point I will request to be knocked out and I will sleep as much as possible until the the pain has diminished.

  • My oral surgeon (and their team) were totally bawse. They put me on Nitrous before starting the IV or using Novacaine, and then used conscious sedation. Talk to your surgeon and if they mention "conscious sedation" and/or Versed, you've got nothing to worry about. The process and med is not only a pain-killer, but it allows you to be awake (able to follow their instructions) but you don't feel anything AND you won't remember it either. Versed has an amnesiac effect (it's wonderful). You just "wake up" later (even though you never were really "out") and it's over. Post-procedure pain is usually some sort or variant of Hydrocondone and after a day or two, you should be fine with Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen. Mostly an ache rather than real pain. Keeping the removal sites rinsed is VERY important.

  • Easy peasy. I was able to take something for my anxiety before hand and had what was called a conscience sedation. I even needed help walking into the dentist office before the procedure. I'd ask for liquid pain medicine for afterward. It just makes things a lot easier. Keep up on the pain medicine and antibiotics as prescribed and no straws!!! Don't spit. Don't strain yourself the first two days. Basically, do everything your dentist tells you to do and you will have a speedy recovery. Invest in a few protein shakes and "spoonable cup of soups" (once cooled), or something like it. They'll keep you full when you have no desire to eat anything.

<<Giant wuss at dental things. I had a ton of dental surgery, orthodontics as a kid, all manner of pain included - and at 49, 2 months ago I finally had to have a 2 wisdom teeth removed. The pain they were causing was unbearable. It was not nearly the traumatic experience I thought I was avoiding for so many years. I still have the other 2 and may yet have to have them out, but I no longer have the apprehension about it. They used a 'conscious sedation' on me that does not require an IV. I hate needles as much as dentists. This was nothing.

    • When I got mine taken out I was awake the whole time. Getting them pulled was quick and painless. The worst thing was tasting all the blood. Pain after wards is no big deal, you'll get painkillers for it

    • I had all four extracted when I was about 15. Wasn't bad. I chose a general anesthetic (for loss of consciousness) -- went into the surgery room, got myself hooked up to an IV, and all I remember is laughing out of nervousness and then waking up in a comfortable chair with my mouth stuffed full of gauze. The recovery's definitely the worst, I think -- basically a week (for me) of just lying about in varying states of pain/discomfort (I was on Percocet but sometimes I felt like it wasn't enough), and being quite hungry 'cause I couldn't eat much. Remember to use your mouthwash and antibiotics.

    • I had mine taken out. I was knocked out for it but it isn't pleasant for about 2 to 3 weeks afterwards. my advice to you would be stay the hell away from straws. do as little sucking as possible and chew with your front teeth.

They knocked me out when I got my wisdom teeth removed. You can't even tell when you're unconscious until it's too late, and time will pass very quickly. There was some pain afterwards for the next day or two, and swelling throughout the next week.

      • I was conscious the entire time, but I didn't feel a thing. I was kind of creeped out when I started hearing a drill, though...
