Is it OK for a 15 year old to date an 18 year old?

Because in Florida you can be arrested and be charged with "lewd and lascivious battery", and be kicked out of your school it. What terrible parents. Edit: The pair were dating since the beginning of the school year at which time the girl who was arrested was 17. All parents were aware they were dating. The parents of the other girl pressed charges once she turned 18.

  • Adolescence is such an odd, exciting, dynamic and terrifying portion of a person's life. To take the growth of maturity (which happens by leaps and bounds that are unique to the individual) and chain it to the numbers 14-18 is well-intentioned, but incredibly flawed. We all know of that special 15 year old who is incredibly mature, responsible and is capable (and in some cases has) assumed duties and roles that many adults would struggle to handle well. We all also know people in their 20's whose personal judgement makes them a danger to themselves. The idea that on the night of your 18th birthday the "maturity fairy" visits your room and endows you with all that you need to be an adult, it's unrealistic. People don't become adults overnight. Personally, I would like to see some sort of civil contract between the parents and the child with various mile-markers and responsibilities that the child has assumed personal responsibility for and gotten the approval of their parents. That way, if a child has spoken with their parents about the fact that they want to be responsible for their own health, education, sexual, financial, or any other portion of their life, the family discusses and collaborates as to whether they agree that the child is capable of assuming personal responsibility for that segment of their life. A scenario would be the kid comes to the parents and says, "Mom, Dad? I've been thinking, and just like I had to get my learners permit and then my driver's license, I would like to take responsibility for making my own health decisions. I've thought about it and I want to be the one who decides if I can have surgery, get piercings, tattoos, ask a doctor for contraception, and so on. Can we talk about you and I signing my sheet so that I am capable of making those decisions for myself?" In that way, the whole family knows what the child is responsible for (and where they have asserted self-determination) and what areas the parents still have a role and responsibility to act in the best interests of the child. If the younger girl in this case had discussed dating and the ability to consent to a sexual relation and gotten her parents consent that she was mature enough to make those decisions for herself, then her age (and the weird thing is that some news orgs are saying she is 15 other are saying that she is 14) isn't relevant. She's asked for personal responsibility, and those who previously had that responsibility have agreed to transfer that decision making over to the adolescent. Just like the mother of the accused has said in interviews. "I just wish that the younger girls parents had contacted me. We could have talked honestly and openly about it, and if they (as the parents of the younger girl) were unhappy, unwilling or unable to support their daughter, I would have counseled my daughter to step back and respect the wishes of the other family."

  • I personally do not think this is right, but so long as they did nothing stupid, I don't mind it. It could also be worse, like a friend of mine being 18 and 'dating' a 13 y.o. over XBL..

  • What the news may be leaving out is that they may have interacted sexually. The interesting thing about the gay community is, they don't believe that they should be held accountable to statutory -blam!-.

        • 2 and a half year difference? That seems nothing out of the ordinary even at those ages. Whether or not you like the idea of that, it's unfair to brand one a criminal and actually attempt to remove them from school. I don't even see what that accomplishes.

          18/2 + 7 = 16 15 < 16 Nope. And that formula comes straight from the Constitution.

Nope. I don't care if if an 18-year-old thinks they "love" a 15-year-old, find someone your own age. I'm sure you'll find a way to get over the heartbreak. I'd make a slight exception if they're both still in high school and one or the other has a early or late birthday (respectively).

          • I say put the parents in jail. What a couple of spineless, heartless, intolerant bastard -blam!-ers. I don't care what your opinion is on dating at those ages, or homosexuality. But this shit? Really? I wouldn't do this to my worst enemy. -blam!-ers. I'm really mad hearing about this. What a couple of stupid -blam!-ing douche lickers.

          • Absolutely ridiculous. Whether or not it should be frowned on is one thing, whether it should be illegal is something else entirely. This is one of those grey areas that should be left alone because there's no public interest in bringing charges. Either you give someone a record needlessly and interfere or you leave it alone and let a technically criminal (but consensual as far as the parties are concerned) act slide. I'm for the latter. The fact the parents waited until she turned 18 is ghastly. It's malicious and there was no previous reporting to the police before they turned 18, was there?

          • Article written by the 18 year old's father.
"It was Kate's senior year -- she only had a few months until graduation and we wanted her to finish. But the parents petitioned the court and asked the judge to remove Kate from school, even though the judge already ruled Kate could continue school. But this other student's parents feel like my daughter "made" their daughter gay. My daughter's girlfriend has said from day one, she cares about my daughter, she never wanted her parents to do this, she was 100% consenting and it was by her own choice that she was with my daughter. She doesn't want Kate to be punished. My daughter's life is being destroyed. Kate is deeply depressed, crying all the time and suffering night terrors."
Those cold hearted mother-blam!-ers! This is why I hate religion. They don't respect the fact that their daughter is lesbian because when they grew up they were taught that homosexuality is a sin and a disease.

          • Its hard to say to be honest. Did the girl whose 15 really love the other girl whose 18? Or did the 18 yr old seduce the 15 yr old and she just went with it? Thats a question that gets brought up and is why the age difference matters. If the girl was 17 instead of 15 you tend to believe she can decide for herself. Its just a stereotype based on age and maturity. Tough break but thats the law.

I dated an 18 year old when I was 14. Something tells me this has more to do with the same sex relationship than it does with their age.

              • I don't know, 18-15 is pushing the bounds of good taste. We should all be able to agree that the age of consent exists for a reason. We should also agree that the age of a majority exists for a reason. I would also think that most people are going to cringe at the idea of a person over the age of majority targeting someone under the age of consent for sex. In this case, one is just above the age of majority, the other one just below the age of consent. It also seems irrational because the two started the relationship legally and it only became illegal once one passed that invisible line. But, that's where the lines are. Most states provide a 3 year age gap for just this scenario. I would guess Florida does not, since she is charged. I don't know, I can see the gray area in this one, but if push comes to shove, I'd prefer a no tolerance policy on people over the age of majority having sexual relations with someone under the age of consent over watering down statutory r@p3 laws or enforcement.

                    • Depends upon the country really and customs. In the UK the age of consent is 16, and if the person had only just turned 18 and the 15 yr old was soon going to be 16 then it wouldn't be that bad. Like a 15,11 month yr old and 18, 1/2 month yr old. That's not as big an age gap as first thought.
