Bungie and Activision are both companies, by default one of their extrinsic motivators is money. So here is what I think will happen:
Bungie is awesome to they're community, so I'm assuming that they won't make us pay for a monthly subscription for one character. That allows everyone to have the ability to play and enjoy the game, but if you want two or more characters: you're going to have to pay. This would allow players to have multiple characters and it would provide Bungie and Activision another source of income. The fan base couldn't complain because you don't need to characters to play the game so they don't have to pay. BUT having to characters would be more enjoyable.
I know that no one wants to pay for anything, but I think this would be a fair way to have Bungie make more money to reinvest into the awesome game that I hope destiny will be.
Opinions? Other ideas?

For many people this would hardly be an optional transaction after purchasing the game. Meanwhile, there are many many micro-transactions which are small aesthetic and attractive enough to players to get them to open their wallets. This solution seems to engender too much ill will, in my opinion. Path of Exile does a model where you were allowed three or four characters, and then you have to pay for additional slots beyond them. Maybe this is a middle road?
