Destiny map sizes and open world

I heard that maps in destiny will be 3km x 3km. now i know this isn't the size of the whole game or a world as a whole. but do you guys think that this may be a little small? Im not complaining or anything but i was kinda of expecting a huge open world kind of thing. do you think that they will connect the maps by small loading screens or something?

how can you tell exactly how big 3km x3km is? I mean, how can you tell if it will feel big enough, without being a game developer, and already knowing what a map that size can provide? Is there any way you can show me a map kinda like the one we are supposing destiny will be like, as a video reference? (Preferably a youtube video or something, so I can kinda feel the size, as if I were playing the game.

    • That's about the size of Defiance's world, but keep in mind that Destiny will have multiple free-roaming areas.

      • For me, 3 km by 3 km fulfills my "huge open world" expectations. In linear games like Halo, we might travel 3 km in the course of a level, but the width of our path usually isn't larger than .1 km. Also, with some help from our friend Pythagoras, we know that 3 km by 3 km means the maps are a little over 4.24 km from corner to corner. I'm still stoked to see these maps.

      • I would like a source as well, because without one I don't even know if this has actually been confirmed. But I have to agree with kjo, that if breaking it into smaller zones means better gameplay, I'm all for it.

Though I have no idea where you heard 3km x 3km. Can you give us a source for that? I like the idea of breaking it up into smaller zones. The Skyrim model was cool, but there was so much empty space that I ended up wishing for more stuff to populate the world in which I explored. If breaking it up into more manageable areas means more encounters, more finely crafted enemy engagements and tactical terrain elements, then I'm all for breaking the game up. A few loading screens will not be the end of me.

When quoting info like this it is usually good form to link a source. Especially when the info as given is highly suspect. However, Since we have no idea how they are designing the world really.... until there is an official announcement we have no idea. However they do it though, let us hope it's epic. :)
