I'm a fan of metal music, but I think this is a bit stupid. I mean, it's kinda useless, isn't it? You don't study a genre of music to get a career out of it; you learn an instrument, form a band and then go out and play that kind of music and hope you get lucky. I think the same about degrees in Jazz and Classical Music.

  • The only difference i can see is that jazz and classical could be applied to teaching, and that a degree could get you a job at one of those fancy music clubs or something. But yeah, in general i've always thought of any kind of performance major as a huge gamble. You either have the talent to make it, or the money to hire a good producer to help you make it. Sure, two-four years of learning will definitely make you better, but do you really need a full degree instead of just hard work and lessons from a good teacher?
