He should die the classic explosion way. Like a REALLY BIG explosion and the someone will say in the comm-radio:
-Chief? Chief?! Chief, do you copy??!!
And then the screen will fade, an epic death, but still nobody knows wether he's alive or not. In that way, people that wants him to die can say he dies, and people who wants him to live on can say that he survived, simple, yet epic.

I think Chief should die in either 2 ways. He could be stuck into a time continuum very similar however that isn't satisfying. I think the more respectable one would be a 'left'over virus.' or something where the humans are threatened, and the only way to adapt is the chief's reclaimer abilities to the max in a explosion he is almost killed. In his last words he donates himself and his DNA to be placed in the rest of humanity to 'reclaim' Humans from transforming into forerunners or something like that….What else is there to reclaim. Bungie reads literature.

He goes out with a bang, dies slowly, AND NOT ONLY saves the world once but 3 times over. That's what I call good plot.
