A question about 'free will'

I don't really understand the concept of free will... (You might say that I view everything as hard determinism) I mean, if free will exists, there should be an alternative of having free will, right? So, how can you see the difference? And how does a world without free will work?
If you think that this is a stupid thread, feel free to ignore it :D
• free will compared to being in chains for the rest of your life can't talk, can't make eye contact, can't own any thing. treated like crap hated etc. there is free then there is bondage so what kind of freedom are we talking about, opposite of this ^^^^ ?
