2 Step Account Verification; Microsoft (FINALLY) jumping on board

Note that the above video is for Google, this is simply do demonstrate how it works for those that don't know. Source
Over the next couple days we will roll out a major upgrade to Microsoft account, including optional two-step verification to help keep your account more secure. Microsoft has increasingly focused on delivering connected devices and services that are currently used by more than 700 million people around the world. A Microsoft account is the key that unlocks your experience across these products—from your Windows PC to your Windows Phone, from Xbox to Outlook.com, from SkyDrive and Skype to Office and much more. Given this critical role for Microsoft account, we remain vigilant in working hard to protect your account, which is why we’re adding an option so you can enable two-step verification to further protect yourself. You should see this option show up in your account in the next few days. You can enable this capability at https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage.
What is 2 step verification? When you sign into an online service, such as Facebook, Gmail, Hotmail, Battle.net, you can set up an added layer of security to your account. By adding either an alternate email address, code generator (smart phones) or simply a text message to your phone, you're sent a code and must input that code to sign into your service. It's been around for a while on other service, but I'm glad to see Microsoft finally making the adjustment. This is for their at hotmail and at outlook email addresses along with their other suite of services. Do you use 2 step verification on you online services? Off the top of my head, just thinking of major outlets that have 2 step verification: Facebook Google/ at gmail Battle.net Authenticator Steam Accounts Apple/iTunes/iCloud; has application specific passwords Microsoft - Hotmail/Outlook jumps on board. ..is Twitter next?

  • If you can set up two factor authentication on your Windows Live ID, you should. I recommend using the variety that relies on an authenticator application (like the battle.net authenticator) on your smartphone, so you don't have to be concerned with text messaging costs and delays.

It's just now coming out? They've been doing that for a long time. Guess it's because i'm part of the beta program. It's a pain in the ass, you have to use a different email everytime it comes up, which is a few times a month. Now I just back out of it and sign in to skip it.

      • I'm pretty sure the two step verification for OS' other then Windows Phone 8 is just a text, instead of an app. At least for now. Hopefully the authenticatior comes to Android.

      • It's a super annoying! It's hit me like 3 times and I had to enter a brand email address every time, not to mention the email took about 10 minutes to get sent. When I saw the option come up a 4th time when I signed last week I just cancelled out of it.

      • Yeah, well its causing me a major pain in the ass. When I set up my gamertag I used my brothers email and now I can't set up this additional layer without getting a code from the email but neither me or my brother remember the password to this old email account. Now it won't let me log in to xbox live without bugging me about this new security crap and it slows everything down tremendously

          • Lel, I get the message to do the new verification system every other time I sign into Xbox. I just back out of it and sign in a second time to get rid of the pop up. My account is perfectly fine on its own. If I don't want the second verification crap I'm not gonna do it.

            • So i got the notification to set this up this week, I choose to have a text sent to my phone, it told me to wait a coupl eof minutes. 10 mins later I got bored and gave up, the text arrived three hours later. I'm all for thisi system but their impementation seems a little unorganised to me.

              • I think that this would work very well; however, the lazy side of me doesn't want to have to check my phone for a randomly generated password each time. I think it would work better if it randomly picked one those verification questions (Where were you born? What is the first name of your best friend?) but it cycled through each time so that it was never the same question twice in a row. That way if someone stole the information, they could not log in until you had logged in another 4 times separately. Correct me if there is anything wrong with this idea please.

                • We need a 100 step verification plan, because 2 just isn't good enough.

                • I wonder if there will be a non-visible "flag" on the more-secured accounts to indicate that they are not being treated like they are "disposable". Not only would the 2-step verification help MS and its services that use the account ID's, if the accounts are flagged, it would help non-MS sites/services (even this site) to note that an account has more "trustability" because the account creator has invested more time and effort into securing their account.

                  • I see the date on the article, but this is old. I had to do this at least a few weeks if not months ago.
