Depends on the games. Some of them would be unfair for the console player VS the PC player. Counter Strike would come to mind. Unless it were co-op modes only or something like that for FPS's or shooters.

 • Granted there can be a gap in terms of fairness when the PC is brought into play because the controls are so much sharper in FPS games and the like, but I think for games like GTA, it could work exceptionally well. Racing games too. The simplest way to allow cross-platform awesomeness is to allow the Nextbox and PS4 to seamlessly join one another's matches. There's no unfair advantage; both are on console controllers.

 • Yeah, for cross-console would be a great and amazing idea. But sadly, I honestly don't see MS and Sony getting to that agreement to allow all non-exclusives to cross. Because that would mean loss of sales for either console, as in for example some people stay on one console because of the friends they have, and give the chance to move they'd switch console. I'm sure there would be a lot more factors that would be decisive to be against that for both companies.

 • Indeed, there is a financial issue with both sides. In fact, I would imagine the main thing preventing cross platform play at the moment is that bloody Xbox LIVE fee. "Why do PS3 players get to play this for free but I have to pay?" In order to make it work, Microsoft would need to take a leap of faith and abolish the LIVE subscription fee. It could happen. Likely won't, but it could. The other point you made was valid, but I also addressed it in another reply earlier:
I have friends who play FIFA on the PS3, and friends who play on the Xbox. But I can't play with my friends on the PS3 because I don't have a PS3, and won't buy one specifically for FIFA. So if Sony won't ever make a penny from me with the PS3, why not allow me to play with my friends across platforms?
• With all the adds floating around the dashboard, I don't see it being such a farfetched idea as it would have been 5 years ago. The adds have to be bringing in considerable money for MS, adding to the already decent subscription fee. I'd imagine with all the money they've made with XBL Gold and add the adds, they should be able to push XBL free on the Nextbox. I mean, who knows, that maybe one of their central points to focus on when they officially announce it. I mean how many people would fall dead in love with the nextbox if XBL were free? I see it as very possible. Even if it's only in the interest to have some sort of leverage over PS4's announcement.
