I just wrote out a stupidly long comment but I've decided to just cut it right down. I think the game will use cloud storage for the save file which you and your friends sync with while in the game-world. This would allow all members to join up at any time (unlike in Minecraft) and not end up with conflicting versions. Judging by how they've laughed of comments about Destiny being an MMO I don't think the game with have large scale public play in the story mode. The menu system visible in the ViDoc shows "Strike" and "Raid" as game mode options, with Strike using a "Random hopper". "Strike" could be cooperative public matchmaking, with the "Raid" being smaller scenarios for you and your friends to play together and gain XP and loot items. Or it could be the other way round. Back to story mode, enemies probably scale in difficulty with your characters level. Loot could be shared, like in Dead Space 3, or it could be dropped in local client-side instances where the loot seen by one player is different to that of another and you cannot interact with the loot in another players game, unless they trade with you. It could also be a combination, with ammo and similar loot and resources shared and special items like weapons spawned in client-side instances. Whether I'm right or wrong about any of this I have no doubt Destiny will be great seeing as it has reportedly been in the pipeline since ODST.

  • Here's a screencap from the reveal trailer that shows Raid, Strike, and a few other play modes. ~The City is theorized to be a social hub. I would also guess that it is the place to buy, upgrade, and customize armor, weapons, and vehicles, and perhaps/probably Traveler powers. ~Chapters would indicate the story mode, PvE campaign, featuring drop-in-drop-out cooperative matchmaking. ~Bounty looks like a weekly challenge, which is a common enough mechanic in FPSes nowadays. The three stars could indicate difficulty and/or reward. ~Strike (along with the subtext "random hopper") sound like standard PvP competitive matchmaking. ~Raid (subtest "Depth of Darkness") sounds like an MMO-style, PvE episodic adventure, probably for loot/gear-based rewards. ~Faction Wars (subtext "random hopper") sounds like another PvP, or perhaps a Firefight-style PvE wave-defense matchmaking. Seeing as we don't have much information by way of factions, we'll have to wait to get more information.

EDIT: partially outdated information, see post above for more. From what I understand, Destiny doesn't just drop people in the same physical geography in the same instance, only those in the same geography at a similar point in the same mission as you. So a cloud-based save makes sense (hence internet connection required! Have a cookie for problem solved). Using MMO definitions, Raid is a longer, epic, multiplayer adventure of significant time and dedication, and in MMOs require coordination and strategy. While Bungie doesn't want to overwhelm players in this regard, I think utilizing the drop-in-drop-out coop to place the right players who need each other in the right instance to defeat a boss or overcome a challenge sounds about right for Raid. To me, Strike speaks of shorter duration, more intense action. That's just me though. I like the idea of client-side loot drop with option to trade. That prevents loot-hoarding and griefing. You're full of bright ideas! Hope Bungie has thought of this before you, or if they haven't, they can listen to you now!
