The Freedom From Religion Foundation mounted a lawsuit against the U.S. Treasury Department and other government officials this week, claiming that they are discriminating against nonbelievers by including the phrase "In God We Trust" on the nation's currency.
"Our government is prohibited from endorsing one religion over another but also prohibited from endorsing religion over nonreligion. The placement of a monotheistic ideal on our nation's currency violates this stricture and is therefore unconstitutional," FFRF Co-President Dan Barker said in a statement.
Along with 19 other plaintiffs, the FFRF argues in the lawsuit that they "are forced to proselytize -- by an Act of Congress -- for a deity they don't believe in whenever they handle money."
I fully agree with this lawsuit. I think that it's pretty clear that printing "In God We Trust" on money violates the idea of separation of church and state. A secular entity should not be spreading the idea of trust in a deity (any deity), especially not through something that everyone has to use.
This idea is not anti-religious. It is the same principle as to why I don't learn about human anatomy in my Shakespeare class. It's not that there's anything wrong with learning about anatomy, that class just isn't the time or place for it. Something printed by the government is not the place to declare that "we" (whoever that refers to) "trust in" a deity, when that is not true in many cases.

Out of all the religious atrocities they could've picked, they decide to go with this nuance. It's literally one frivolous phrase on your notes. I bet half of you don't even notice it 99% of the time.
-
Not a big deal for me. I own one of these.
-
This is the single stupidest thing I have ever had the displeasure of reading.
-
Seems like a huge waste of time and money to alter a piece of paper.
-
Seems like a waste of time to me. Also is currency federal regulation?
-
Who honestly gives two shits?
-
incidentally, the constitution never says separation from church and state, it mostly just states that congress shall not establish a church and the first amendment states freedom of religion not freedom from religion so really the lawsuit doesn't actually have a case
-
Who, on a regular basis, looks at our currency, the back side in some cases, and is offended by in god we trust? Also, it's the reason people came to America in the first place. Okay, not really, but partly.
-
I don't really care.
-
I think it's worth mentioning that the Federal Reserve, which is responsible for producing all of the United States' currency, is technically an independent company.
-
Who cares what it says on money. Totally useless lawsuit.
-
Don't we have more pressing issues than a few words on money that no one really pays attention to?
-
they're 4 little words.

Edited by MyNameIsCharlie: 7/29/2013 4:45:55 PMGood. Its about time we removed that 1950's McCarthyist bullshit.
-
Move to another country, problem solved...
-
Edited by Abe Lackman: 7/26/2013 5:48:18 AMI think it should stay. It's fitting for both sides of the religious argument. For theists it means exactly that, but for atheists who do not believe in God it has a double meaning as our currency has nothing backing it so it's saying "In Nothing We Trust". Also, it's tradition. Why do atheists always have to -blam!- with tradition when it's not really bothering anyone? Didn't realize how old this topic was. Who the -blam!- necros these old ass threads all the time?
-
As an Atheist. I do not agree with it's lawsuit, because it's a waste of time, and because it's part of our culture.
-
Oh my God. People seriously need to get over themselves and these petty little things. Okay, our money says "In God we trust", but no one is forcing any religion on anybody with this. It's such a minute detail. And as OP points out, who is "we"? It does not necessarily mean the holder of the money trusts God. "We" could refer to the government and the principles it was built on. Lord forbid we hold root to the foundation of our nation.
-
*facepalm*
-
How much money are they wasting on this petty lawsuit? -_-
-
IM OK WITH THIS

Edited by Neanderthal 487: 7/28/2013 8:56:26 PMIt would save money by removing the minute amount of metal on the coin that makes up the letters. This metal can then be used for a more useful purpose, such as constructing Skynet drones.

Wow people who really are gonna put this much effort in lot something so irrelevant have nothing better to do with their time
-
Edited by NSCLord: 7/28/2013 8:42:52 PMThe USA is secular. The currency is therefore unconstitutional. Deal with it.
-
It really isn't a big deal. Some people are just looking to kick up a fuss.
-
This is retarded i so many ways.
