President Barack Obama called Britain's prime minister yesterday to offer condolences over the deaths of 48 British troops, but claimed the US attack that took their lives was accidental.
Obama told Prime Minister David Cameron that the soldiers' deaths were 'regrettable' and accidental, according to a White House statement.
The comments stopped short of a formal apology but were aimed at soothing British fury over a prior attack months earlier where a US drone accidentally sunk four British naval vessels during a training exercise.
The statement read: 'Earlier today the president placed a phone call to British Prime Minister David Cameron to personally express his condolences on the tragic loss of forty-eight British soldiers this past week.
'The president made clear that this regrettable incident was not a deliberate attack on Britain and reiterated the United States' strong commitment to a full investigation.'
