It was a red. No question about it.

I can see why the red was given, but I do believe the case is much much stronger for a yellow. It was an attempt to control the ball, and it was clear Nani didn't see the Madrid player. I think that cost United the game, personally. However they played brilliantly after that - even during the 10 minutes Madrid scored twice.

It could have been given either way, some refs are just different to others. Unfortunately United has the type of ref who follows the laws instead of using a bit of common sense. I disagree, a footballer should know where other players are around them, it's what their taught to do at a young age, attacking players more so. He shouldn't have jumped with his leg out because the opposing player is obviously going to challenge for the ball as well.

The leg was raised quite some time before the Madrid player was nearby in an attempt to control the ball, with Arbeloa (I think) coming in at full pelt on the blindside of where Nani's attention was - All of which should have been apparent from where the ref or indeed closest assistant was standing. I'm not saying it's [i]never[/i] a red card, because every situation is different. This time, I really don't think it should have been.

Nani's leg may have been raised before the Madrid player was nearby, but Nani still should have expected a Madrid player to challenge for the ball. Nani shouldn't have even jumped and tried to control the ball in the first place, who does that? In my opinion, it was a red card as it was dangerous play. Should it have been given in a match where there's so much riding on decisions such as that? Nope, that's where the ref lacked common sense.

What are you even trying to argue? That it was 100% a red card but because it was a big game he shouldn't have given it? That's more than a bit hypocritical. I'll try to remember next time i play football to not attempt to win the ball incase someone from the other team tries the same.

Some refs are more lenient in the big games, everyone knows that. I'm not saying that. What I'm saying is, why go for the ball in the hair with your feet expecting not to hurt the opposing player? It's common knowledge that you don't go for the ball in the air and stick your leg out as you'll more than likely make contact with the opposition. Also if you look at Nani's reaction (doing what he does best) after the challenge, he knows what he has done.

It was dangerous play. And in the letter of the law, if the ref deems it to be dangerous play then it's a straight red. Even Roy Keane was saying it was a red.
