I am conflicted with my religion (not a flame war)

Like many people, I used to be Catholic, eventually converted to an agnostic. I feel conflicted, I believe in something but I don't know what, I don't feel comfortable being an atheist or agnostic, and I don't feel like being a Catholic. I feel conflicted, I feel anxious, what do you people recommend, what should be my next steps?

  • Read, read, read. I suggest starting with The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine.

  • You have to decide what is best for you. Unfortunately, that can't be loped from outside. I wish I could, but I can't. Try to set aside some time for introspection. Decide what role, if any at all, you want to have god in your life. Then make those changes.

  • Catholicism tends to lose people as they go through their teenage years because of its rigid tradition. On top of that, it's the same age when people start really questioning what they believe in and why. From a Christian perspective, they do a lot of un-Biblical things and I don't recommend continuing going to a catholic church. I was raised Catholic and went through the same experience you seem to be going through; I was agnostic for a while (it's hard to lose the guilt/paranoia Catholicism drills into you), but joined a Protestant church and got into Apologetics and really got back into religion. I recommend you ask your friends for a recommended protestant church, and I think you'll enjoy it more. Join their youth group if they've got one. Overall it's a much better experience for growing spiritually and you'll actually learn about the faith, rather than what you experience at catholic mass.

    • Do you believe in a divine power? Not "God", the guy with the beard and white robe, but a force outside our known realm of existence that may or may not have had a hand in our creation. If you do, but do not follow any particular religion, that makes you either a Deist or a Theist. If you think that revelation is straight up bull shit, then you're a Deist. If you welcome the possibility of revelation being true in one form or another, then you're a Theist. I am a Deist. For a long time I called myself an Agnostic Theist, but a certain special someone made me look into it and reevaluate (and also learn the actual meanings of the words I use) what I believe in.

        • You'll get over it. Happens in every transition; happens to all of us. I even tried to mix science with religion for a few months.

Grow some balls and join the atheist party. We have hookers and ice cream.

              • Not worry about it? Is it really that big of a deal? Does it really matter? Just live your life.
