Please, for the love of all things great Bungie, DO NOT TIE LOOKS TO PLAYER STATS! Make customization easy and accessible. Where you lose player identity is when everyone looks the same. Why does everyone look the same? It's because you lable some gear the 'best'. You need to spend a shitload of whatever on this piece of armour. OF COURSE PLAYERS WILL ASSOCIATE THAT WITH THE BEST ARMOUR. Hardly anyone wears the default or beginning armours, because they associate it with being a low price, therefore not worthy of being worn, even if it does look good. Then a crapload of people wear the expensive armour, no one wears the cheap armour, and everyone looks the same. Even worse would be making our armour and what not tie in with stats. This helmet is clearly better because it gives you the best health/stats. Even if it looks bad, people will still wear it, because it gives them the most competitive edge in the game. THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT TIE PLAYER LOOKS TO STATS. Give us a wealth of customizability to begin with, not just 2-3 options. If you give us armour based on a currency, the most expensive will be the most worn. If you give us loot based on difficulty, the most difficultly achieved armour with be the most worn. So, although player incentive to play the game is based on rewards, and giving us armour as a reward seems like the logical thing to do, it really gets rid of player identity.

  • From my understanding Bungie is fully pursuing the personalization aspect. With this assumption, the difference comes when they decide whether certain items are unlocked by an overall skill level or specific achievements. Let me elaborate. Trying not to focus on Halo, many games make it so that certain skills are unlocked when you reach overall milestones. You reach level 10, and you can unlock any skills or equipment requiring 10. Instead I would like it made so that the requirement for skills and such are dictated by what you have done through your gameplay. Regardless of your overall level, if you have gotten 1000 headshots with a rifle, then you gain the ability to improve the damage of the rifle you used to get those headshots. Or a machine gun. Rather than making it so that people need to be a required level to quick reload a machine gun, make it so that once you take down 500 opponents while they are reloading then you can utilize the quick reload option. So on and so forth.

  • I would like a balance of the two since I am quite sure that Bungie will be able to create very nice armour. I would be fine with apparel doing very little but being able to equip smaller items or enhance what you currently own to make yourself stronger. Still, it is up to Bungie on how it works and I am confident that they won't disappoint us.

  • Precisely. The idea of personalization doesn't work when everyone wears the same gear. From what I can gather though, Bungie is PROMOTING people to create their own unique character within Destiny. The team at at Bungie is smart enough to realize the whole "best gear" thing, and I'm almost positive they're going to avoid it.

  • They didn't with Halo 3 or Halo: Reach.

Yes they did. As I remember the armor in Reach and Halo 3 was purely cosmetic. You're also forgetting that this isn't Halo. This is something new entirely.

  • They tied their armour to a difficulty in Halo 3 and a currency in Reach.

That's totally different than tying stats to an armor. I don't mind having to work for my gear. If I have to beat a certain dungeon or pay a certain amount of credits to get a piece of gear I want I'm fine with that. What I don't want certain armor being better than other armor, because that means everyone will wear the same thing. Working for your gear is a system I don't mind, because it gives people the oppurtunity to easily express their achievements, or they can decide not too.

  • If you read my post, I went on about all 3 systems. Tying armour to difficulty, money or stats. Katana armour or Recon in Halo 3. The more expensive helmets in Halo: Reach.

  • But your points about difficulty and cost were invalid. While some people will do that, most won't. I'm level 130 in Halo 4 and I still wear the War Master armor. Why? Because I think looks cool. Many Halo 4 players who have the Mk. IV armor don't wear it, while some do because they like it, not to show everyone they beat the campaign on Legendary. Even if a lot of people wear the same thing because they're proud of their achievements I say let them wear it. For the people who genuinely want a unique character, they will choose the armor they like the most. Again, I just don't want my customization limited because some of my favorite prices have horrible stats.

  • But MANY players do wear a thing just because it costs a lot or it was difficult to get. And if I generally like the look of it, my sense of player identity is lost if a plethora of other players are wearing it just because it's "difficult to get" or "very expensive". If all cosmetic pieces were just given to us at the beginning, we could truly feel unique from other players. But I doubt this will happen. The least I'm hoping for is not tying looks to stats.

There are two groups of people in games where customization is present. There's the group like you and I who are into it to create a unique identity for our characters, but there is another group who is into it solely to show off what they've accomplished in the game. The game developers have to cater to both groups. While it would be awesome if I had boundless customization options right of the bat, Im with you on the prediction that it's not going to happen.
