Boobs in Destiny (Breast Thread Ever)
12/23/2014 Edit: This thread was made before Destiny was released. We didn't know how things were going to be yet!
There's a certain type of response that I'm expecting for this thread (immature and full of boob jokes), and then there's a certain kind of response I'm looking for (responsible conversation). I'm not telling either of you types of posters to leave. It's okay. I would like to talk about breasts. Specifically, armored breasts. I don't want Destiny to go down a dark path of poor anatomy. Allow me to say that the more unbalanced the ratio of female to male artists there are on a project, the higher the likelihood of us seeing game armor like this. It's annoying enough to have two melons on your chest, but when they're held up by gravity-defying pieces or metal, that's painful. Bras filled with cushioning and breathable material can still be painful. Imagine chicken wire holding up your moobs. But that's an over-the-top fantasy MMO, not a space opera. So let's pick a space opera. Why does the world of Mass Effect require lady lumps on armor? Why are those emphasized boob pieces necessary in a game that made some huge strides in female representation in games? Do sports bras not exist there? Can we top that off with the idea of a blunt object going towards someone's chest? Lady lump armor will make things slide into the -blam!-ing sternum. You know, the bone right in front of a shit ton of vital organs. So what's the solution for this problem? 1. Cut a hole in the box. 2. Make sure your artists/modelers are well versed in proper female anatomy. 3. Buy a sports bra. 4. Take the awesome male armor you had before and put a woman in it. Don't get me wrong! People come in all shapes and sizes. Breastplates will sometimes need to be a bit bigger for some people and some people will need slimmer sets of power armor. Sometimes people wear form-fitting armor, but that still doesn't excuse outlining the breasts on the armor. Wanting armor that caters to the female anatomy doesn't justify overcompensating for the female anatomy. Armored breasts do not need to be lifted and separated when one encapsulated piece suffices in the first place. Done. You think I'm kidding? I'm -blam!-ing serious.

  • I love seeing threads like this. I'll admit that I do enjoy playing as female characters even though I'm a guy (don't like staring at man ass all day). What I don't like, however, is playing as a stripper with a machine gun/sword/rocket launcher/knife/etc. I like strong female protagonists. I think to Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in Alien, Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs, or the character of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series (book series, I haven't seen the movies yet). I think Bungie will do a good job of making sure we don't have stripper super soldiers and don't exaggerate female anatomy (not a fan of huge boobs, personally). I think we can all settle on average, and then having those average boobs covered up by appropriate armor that would be worn by real women in real combat.

  • Any excuse to look at breasts I'm sure modellers will love having to look at the female figure if it means making armour more realistic!

    • My first post on The Forum so please forgive any missteps... If anyone is interested in a real world application of female armor here is a link to an article referencing Joan of Arc's armor. http://www.jeanne-darc.info/p_jeanne/armor.html

      • They've already shown ladies' armors. You could also look back at Reach an how they did women's armors. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

        • obviously theres going to have to be some lumpage for comfort reasons. i don't think a fine lady such as a guardian needs to have her chest squished by the armor that protects her. they are probably going to go the route they did in reach: the exact same armor for men and women, except shaped diferently to compensate the apropriate anatomy.

          • I want to start by saying how impressed I am with the quality of this thread from what I've read of the responses. OP is good too. I understand your point. As everyone else has already noted, Bungie hasn't normally had problems with portraying women in a realistic way. I don't, however, agree with the contention that female armor should look just like male armor. You are indeed correct that under a regime of strict realism this would essentially be the case. However, under a regime of strict realism, there are a lot of other things that wouldn't be happening in video games. Video games aren't strictly realistic. Therefore what I propose is modified realism of the sort many games have already offered: there are differences between men and women and we shouldn't shun them or stick our heads in the sand and insist they don't exist. But in the fantasy world of entertainment, we accept things like little 10 year old Hit Girl punching 200 pound men through doors in Kick Ass. We accept it because it's fun and amusing. We also accept that the feminine form shines through armor restrictions to a moderately greater extent than it realistically "should" in sci-fi games because it's fun and pleasurable to most gamers. I have no data to back this up, but most female gamers, from my interaction with them on a personal level, would be comfortable with the example of male-female armor difference you showed in Mass Effect. There's a lot of mileage between that example and having every female character in your game built and dressed like Isabella from Dragon Age II. Also, this is the best topic title I've ever seen on B.net.

            • Eh... Look I understand that gaming tends to give females a large "character", but that's because that is the main thing that differentiates male's from females in their fysical appearance. Or do you prefer a man's package sticking out? :P

              • Bungie is very good at not overly sexualizing their female characters. Even Cortana, who takes the form of a completely unclad woman, never felt like a sad attempt at eye candy, to me, at least. If you play Reach, you'll see that female Spartans look as soldierly and professionally as the males. Take a look at the Titan concept art and the "Law of the Jungle" trailer. The Titan is a woman.

                  • I don't think bungie was planning on doing that. The only reason i know that this character is a girl because of her waist.

                    • So firstly, chicks in functional armor = freakin awesome! But I don't think you can fault mass effect so much for this one, Bioware isn't THAT bad when it comes to this subject (barring a few Asari matron characters here and there) and there's nothing inherently sexist about bringing attention to the fact that a character is female. However! Within the setting of Destiny I would much prefer to see a very Mjolnir armor take on the subject. If a hunter is wearing something that shows that they have breasts its not gonna bother that much (preferably of the undivided sort) but a Titan? Fully clad as they are, there should be zero excuse for "Boob plate" armor on titans.

                    • Destiny shouldn't turn into one of those unmodest games like the picture form your first link in OP. I believe in knowing who the women are, but not in the way some of their new Hunter woman versions are looking like (see picture above). The difference between men and women can be shown through a smaller form, wider hips, shorter stature, ect.
Wanting armor that caters to the female anatomy doesn't justify overcompensating for the female anatomy.
That sums it up, but I can say once more, let us know the women by size and hips, not overcompensating for the female anatomy. They are more petite than men and they should use that to make them different and recognizably so. This is a very good subject to bring up and try to get changed, Cortana Five!

                      • I see your point, but it was well done in Reach, an I don't think Bungie will have female characters walking around with huge melons. The body differences were well done in all the Halo games (excluding Cortana). Remember Dare? She didn't have melons, neither did Kat, Bungie does it right, and that's probably not going to change.
