The press has got their hands on Splinter Cell Blacklist...

And so far, it's pretty unanimous that they all love it. They say it caters to fans old and new, and despite what we've seen, is a thinking man's game, and screwing up now is still very easy. And for you purists, there's a difficulty called Perfectionist, where Mark and Execute is turned off, you can't melee enemies from the front, and the goggles won't let you see through walls. The AI difficulty is also increased, as expected. But that's enough of me, there are a crapload of articles you can read. • I am loving this version of Splinter Cell. I am a old lover of the Splinter Cell series and played them all to death ( besides Conviction just rented that one ). And I am really glad they are bringing back the stealthy play style and not going total action. It is quite satisfying to sneak around lets say a yacht doing spy work without being seen or heard once and leaving all the guards standing.

  • I have it, and I've played a bit (Been moving around and don't have my 360 hooked up), so here's my thoughts. It's more like classic Splinter Cell than Conviction (I'm on Realistic), but it does feel like Splinter Cell Lite in a couple of areas. I've beaten the Benghazi level, and despite grabbing my fair share of enemies, I wasn't able to interrogate any of them to find out how many bad guys were ahead, or pick up any storyline intelligence. And as far as I can tell, you won't be remotely hacking locked doors or computers like Chaos Theory. However, I have shot out my fair share of lights and knocked people out in the dark, so you can definitely rock the stealth approach. You aren't punished for going quiet, in fact, stealth actions make you more money for the economy system, followed by Panther, and with Assault making the least. The Paladin and loadout customization is awesome. I also love how you can go on side missions to get better gear. I do miss how your SC20K was your all-in-one gadget, but they made inventory management so much better than old Splinter Cells that it's not really needed anymore. It's a great evolution of Chaos Theory's Stealth, Assault, and Recommended loadout system. I thought the Blacklist modes would be totally imbalanced by Spies having guns, but since it takes like 2 SMG mags to take out a Merc, and 5 shots from a Merc to pop a Spy, you still have to get up close and personal to take out a Merc. And that's actually way harder without the Sticky Shocker Gun. Spies and Mercs also carry way less gadgets than Classic mode, which keeps things balanced. I haven't given Classic mode a shot yet, so I can't comment on it. Overall, Blacklist is a step firmly in the right direction for the series. It's getting back to its roots with a few nice updates along the way. Oh, and graphically, the game does look really, really good.

I just hope they can get back to the more open level design.
