Categories: The Solution to the Clutter

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like everywhere I go I keep seeing the same threads, and of course it's because almost every tag is used in every post. Basically anyone that makes a new post just adds, #gaming, #bungie, #offtopic, #Flood, #Septagon, #Community. I mean, I guess it makes sense to add as many as possible, but then what is the point of even having the tagging system if whatever tag you look at you see the same threads. The old system was nice because you could go to the Flood and see off topic stuff, you could go to the Community Forum and have a nice conversation about community stuff, or you could go to the Bungie Universe Forum and laugh at all the nerds, but we can't really do that anymore, not in the same way. What do I propose? Add categories. The purpose would be to make it so that you can only have one "Official Tag" and by clicking to show this tag you would, in essence, be seeing the Flood, or the Community Forum, or the Bungie Universe Forum, but you wouldn't see the conglomerate Bungie Community Flood Forum, unless you went here. So what am I really trying to suggest? Turn the "Official Tags" into categories, and when anyone posts they have to check ONE of these. It would make it more like the old sub-forums. Within these categories you could have any tag you wanted and by following or clicking these tags you could see any posts tagged with these from any and every category or you could filter within categories. This relatively small change could, I think, make a big difference. EDIT: Yeah! It happened!

  • Thanks, Bungie. I really didn't think you guys would have noticed my suggestion. :) I'm really liking the change.

Sub forums and you get up to three tags. I'd go with one hash tag myself. Because right now, like you've said, this is a mess. There's a widely used and perfected forum template for a reason. Some of these solutions are needlessly convoluted. Is the forum really better if we have to check boxes and categories with hash tags some of which are prioritized and some of which aren't? All that does is turn people off to discussing here. It's gotta be quick and easy like the widely used forum template is.

    • Better idea, just have forums back. With more content per page. Add the #feedback hashtag to your OP, then the devs can see this.

      • I've been pondering this myself and I agree that this could be a good change. With the ability to add as many hashtags as possible it seems like any one search parameter is still yielding just about every post. In time, most members will hopefully move away from always including the same tags, but for now its slightly frustrating. Your proposed idea would alleviate the issue though it would bring it back to a more closed subforum and what happens when people abuse it? Still going to have a bunch of topics out of place. Its really on us to just use the appropriate hashtags only.

Or, alternatively, you're only allowed to use one official tag when you post (but you don't have to use one). I think that would help keep the official channels from over-lapping without effecting the current format.

        • I would very much like a categories system.

        • Great idea, however I am wondering does the "thread" bump when you reply to someone's comment? I would rather provide specific feedback to whatever one else has said to bump this as a good idea, rather than make a comment saying "great idea"

I like it. It keeps the 'one forum organized by hashtags' feel, but actually forces users to respect the definition of "official hashtags," thereby allowing the hashtag-organization system to actually work. Unlike now, when you can tag a post with something like #offtopic and #universe together...which is stupid. We need safe guards against dumb user practices. Right now, it is the Hide button - but something preemptive for this particular offense would assert organization.
