Grammatically, the correct pronoun to use in such a situation is "he" until proven otherwise. Your use of "he or she" is an example of political correctness, which is vastly different, muddied, inefficient, and utterly stupid. If you wish to argue that it inhibits women's rights somehow, be informed that you'll have to target all languages as well. Some, like Spanish, use masculine and feminine descriptors and articles (A, An, and The, for example). If you stated the correction from a genuine belief that you were right, you need to disavow your current Grammar Curriculum and possibly the one teaching it.
