HDTV Splitscreen problem! 4:3 Aspect ratio??!?!?!

As some of you know, I recieved my Halo 3 copy today from the Pontiac contest. I have been playing campaign fine by myself for about an hour. My brother just got here and we went in to do some splitscreen co-op campaign, and bam... Theres black bars on the left and right side of the screen! I tried going through every setting, reading the manual, checked my Xbox360 settings but it wont change! Any suggestions (or anyone else with their copy confirm this issue?) Thanks.

 •
Posted by: tranceboy1981 First time I've ever had to post a negative comment on B.Net. I love this game. I know what they were trying to do and I fully understand the explanation. I don't think there is a grand conspiracy to sell Xboxes, Bungie simply made a choice, to them, the quality of the split screen visuals was more important than the size of those visuals. I think we have identified that a large part of the community disagrees with this choice. For what it's worth, I agree with asking Bungie to let people make the choice for themselves. I, like most others would choose to be able to use more of the screen. This is a big issue for the large group of social offline players. Give me back my screen real-estate Bungie!
Well said. With all due respect to Bungie and anyone who supports their reasoning for making this choice, please allow us 16:9'ers to have it our way, as well. I find myself not wanting to invite friends over to play for this very reason. I cannot see the detail on the board and my playing skill is affected. Thank god you cannot play ranked games with guests online. Who would have thought Halo 2 would have any advantage over this new installment? I'll take vertical splitscreen with less peripheral range over wasted screen space any day. BUNGIE -- PLEASE UPDATE AND FIX FOR VERTICAL MULTIPLAYER.

 • It's not that 1 match is too long, we usually play for a couple hours at time with multiple match making sessions. Maybe the match making screen is enough to erase the memory effect. i hope you are right.

 • Are games going to be taking so long that you're worried about burn-in? After each game ends, the entire screen fills up again, and you shouldn't have any burn-in. Right?

 • The issue most people are missing is that the black bars will cause burn-in with extended use, so there should be an option to either increase the FOV or split vertically, yes i realize this is worse or whatever. i'd rather have my view slightly skewed than having burn-in on my $2000 television, which will happen, i play on xbl all the time with a guest on the social playlists.

 •
Posted by: Packnut I'm not complaining about how big the picture is but that I can not tell who is on what team? How could this be by design? what am I doing wrong I hit the back button to bring up the teams and only see the top team not the one below the split screen only happens when playing split but still an issue why would they allow it to get cut off? is there a way to scroll so I can see both teams? what am I missing? this goes beyond the black bar issue into not being able to see who has what score who is lagging out etc..........
scroll with the right analog stick. Regardless. I understand that they wanted to maintain the FOV. I promise, I get that. I also get that there would be an advantage for those that are playing split screen (does it matter in unranked matches?). But this is THE game for the 360. And you're going to try and tell me to NOT be disappointed and to quit -blam!-ing. Come on. I'm not flaming the pants off of Bungie, and I'm not flaming anyone that disagrees with me. I'm telling you why I find it annoying. I KNOW I'm not alone, either. Every time I think about how Bungie let this one go, I think back to watching the Launch day clips. They always show people playing 1 person to a TV. Think about if they had shown the split screen on launch day. They wouldn't have, because it looks like crap. That's probably how the game was tested and played at the Bungie offices. Everyone to their own TV. They never got a chance to see the suck. So they don't know. As far as maintaining aspect ratio, how about people playing on a 4:3 tv?... they aren't letter boxed to 16:9. There are a lot of people out there ALREADY at a disadvantage. Their field of view sucks. If Bungie claims this is by design, then why not letterbox the 4:3 TV users?

 •
Posted by: SpYDeRPiG 65 packnut, if youve got a 57" widescreen, you should be the last person to talk about needing more viewing space....
But you don't get it! It's 2,000 dollars! So no it's not just a 57'' widescreen television. /sarcasm. Agreed. But entirely subjective like his post.

 • Thanks I will try that but of course now im not playing in HD but then again being the game is only 640P anyway not the 720p or the 1080i advertised I guess it does not make much difference!!!!! but hey it was all by design! I'm glad that developers of GOW and Rainbow six Vegas and Warhawk and on and on and on could design a game correctly to fill my $2000 57inch screen!!!! [Edited on 10.01.2007 8:42 AM PDT]

 • I'm not going to read every one of these posts but does anyone have the answer about this? so by them having the back bars and keeping the windows the same how in the hell do you get to see who has left from the team below the split??? If you are not on the top team then you can not tell who is on the other team! The other night we are playing well we could only see the top 2 people on the team below the spilt screen guess what that was me and my guest everyone else had left!!!!! the game this is bull Sh** so you can not even tell who is left on your team??? this was by design???? come on you have to be kidding me!!!!! does everyone get what im talking about????? •
Posted by: UKR TNA Yeah i thought that too, i saw like "eh, what the f**k?" went through all the options to find a vertical split screen. then i realized that is does keep the aspect of 16:9 for both both and yeah it makes sense. but bungie could of put something on those sides of darkness. even if just a logo, that cool bungie darkened theme wallpaper that came with special edition or picture of chief and arbiter at either side. so stop youre -blam!-in its fine, its supposed to be that way and as for gow youll notice you lose quite a bit if detail as it zoomed view closer to the character and yes in 2 player it is stretched cmon be happy. •
Posted by: Achronos In split screen, the game maintains aspect ratio and viewport first. The alternatives were vertical split or altering the viewport (both distort the view). Both of those solutions suck. It isn't "Unforgivable." It is the best solution to the problem. The alternatives have poor visual quality and don't meet our standards. It isn't a matter of "figuring it out" it is a matter of having a set specification for how we want you to see the world in the game, and sticking to it. So, not a bug. By design.
Posted by: tetzloff i am not trying to be a jerk. i just spent 70 something dollars on a game that isnt in 16x9 when there are no hardware limitations. halo3 xbox 360 and everything. and the above post reply was a scapegoat answer. should we not expect the game to be cutting edge (which 16x9 is not) or at least "EQUAL" to every other multiplayer game on the system. i think so.. i dont have a small screen.. my plasma is 42". how do you explain gears of war being in full 16x9, they were obviously able to figure it out? this problem exists on halo3 and if left unfixed is unforgivable. if anyone does have any links to any confirmation by bungie on this (past or present articles) I would certainly entertain them.. thanks in advance.

Thank you...and to all you GoW people... GoW is a Third Person Over the Shoulder game.....Halo 3 is a FIRST PERSON Shooter....Theres a lot more freedom in viewpoint and what is visible on a 3rd person shooter game. I do not by any standards have a small TV at my house (55 inch DLP) and I can honestly say that the black bars have not hindered my split screen experience at all because the view is not skewed at all.

 •
Posted by: Gen Chicken
Posted by: EyeCrust
Posted by: Gen Chicken My roommate and I have given up and simply stretched the image. It looks like garbage, and although you can't see any more than before, at least the stuff that you can see is bigger; but fatter.
Well, there you go. Had the image been stretched out to accommodate your full screen and not maintained the 16:9 resolution then you'd get this exact same effect.
Why not expand the field of view without stretching it?
Now you start getting into the realm of FoV which has potential problems all on its own. When you change the FoV in a game you will either see more or less depending on the FoV used. For example, in racing games the FoV angle used is often widened beyond 90 degrees the faster you're going to give you a tunneling effect to reduce visibility (a fish eye effect sort to speak). This type of change has serious side effects on the sensation of speed. For example, Unreal Tournament not only had faster character movements but the FoV used is below 90 degrees to give the illusion of greater distance traveled by the player. Not to mention the fact that you are actually changing how much the user is seeing when changing the FoV. So consider going into multiplayer in split screen with a different FoV perhaps letting you see more peripheral vision. It's not longer an even playing field (though the debate here might also fit into the whole widescreen vs. standard).

 •
Posted by: fatal 0Efx
Posted by: Gen Chicken To everyone that has come to this thread to say, more or less, 'quit -blam!-ing...': Stop. A lot of people have purchased this game with the hope of filling up their (sometimes purchased exactly for THIS game) HDTV. How would you feel if you dropped around a grand for a TV, 60-120ish for a game only to boot it up after standing on line for a couple of hours and finding that you and your friend/family member have been reduced to 4:3. I don't watch much television, I don't even play too many video games. Why did I buy this gigundus tv? For Halo 3.
It really amazes me how so many people think the split screen aspect ratio is 4:3 simply because their splits screens don't utilize the entire screen. Can we say simple geometry? Halo 2 didn't even use 4:3 (or 16:9 for that matter) when using splitscreen.
I was merely saying that I was reduced by a 4:3 sized box....now within that box I now have an even smaller 16:9 box. I'm not an idiot. I can tell that no matter how many times you say I need the proper aspect ratio, I still can't see -blam!-. My roommate and I have given up and simply stretched the image. It looks like garbage, and although you can't see any more than before, at least the stuff that you can see is bigger; but fatter.

 •
Posted by: tetzloff
Posted by: Seabiscuit68 Guys IT IS STILL 16:9!!! Please try and look at the screen. If you shrink down the image to half the size (there is another person playing on top of you that is taking up the other half the screen)....and you went all the way to the edges of your TV...simple math tells you your aspect ratio is now 16:4.5. This is not a normal or supported or even wanted resolution. In order to fix it, it needs to reduce the size of the horizontal to give you the 16:9 again. They didn't screw up and you shouldn't be pissed off. You have a 16:9 inch widescreen tv and they are giving you two players in that aspect ratio. There is nothing wrong with the game or your TV. Do some math, use some common sense.
ok i can see where your going with it there, and again i ask all defenders of this issue, why did gears of war not have this problem? there were no black bars for this game and it was a horizontal multiplayer game as well? (oh and saying that epic and bungie are two different companies will not work). everyone seems to be ignoring the core issue here.
It is not a problem. GOW used the entire real estate yes, but in GOW coop you also had a lot more peripheral view than in Halo2. This would be unacceptable in MM because it would offer a huge advantage to those in splitscreen!

 • its the way the game is, split screen is always horizontally split now. and though it was annoyin at firsrt on h2, i got use to it fast now i miss it... i wish they would give you an option. id even pay microsoft points for the option.

 • It is not about the visuals, it is about not giving either of the split screen players more peripheral range of vision than they would have normally. If your screen height is directly proportionate in split screen as it is in single player widescreen, but they fill your widescreen from side to side, you will get a mor panoramic view (~50% more peripheral site) and thus have an advantage over those players who are not splitscreen. I reiterate, it is not about visuals, it is about keeping the advantages to a minimum offering a fairer experience for all.

 • If your tv is default widescreen, and you play splitscreen, you'll have to live with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
