Can someone explain group "followers"? [answered]

I understand that when someone adds themselves to a group queue they are added to the list of the group's followers. This seems similar to Facebook's subscription to user's pages. When someone adds a friend and are waiting to be accepted, they are listed as a subscriber. If the request is not accepted, they remain subscribed to the user's public updates unless they are removed. What use is it to a non-member of a group to be following that group? What are they able to see? I am simply unaware of the purpose.
[EDIT]: THIS HAS BEEN ANSWERED ELSEWHERE. It is possible for groups to make posts visible to the public, allowing followers to get a feel for what the group is all about.
