Optimatch - Lets talk about the state of Halo matchmaking

I'd like to have a [civil] discussion about Halo matchmaking. Where would you like to see 343i improve matchmaking? What's missing? What do you think could be better? - BTB Objective is sorely needed, what game types do you think would work well? - Any Improvements you would like to see to the maps themselves? - How often are are you seeing the DLC in outside of the DLC playlist?

  • -classic 4v4 would be nice -Team doubles (which is coming but is it perm?) -Multiteam (favorite playlist) The ability to start up a match from the beginning

    • Personally, I'd like to see separate Ranked and Social playlists, along with forced DLC for approximately half of the total playlists. I hated many things about Halo 3, but it's matchmaking system was not one of them.

    • If BTB Objective is included - they should include CTF, King of the Hill and possibly Extraction, the rest would be really sucky for it :/ As for map improvements, they need to fix Exile, having one team spawn with a Gauss, and another with a Tank is a joke. I rarely see DLC outside the DLC playlist, mainly because Crimson sold poorly again :/ -- My suggestions for Matchmaking would be: - Merge all Objective playlists into one, CTF, KoTH, Oddball combined for Team Objective. - Make a Rumble Pit playlist w/ Regicide, FFA Slayer Pro, FFA Infinity Slayer, Oddball, King of the Hill - Make Doubles permanent, with the right Forge maps and re-balanaced default maps, it could play extremely well. - Drop the whole rotational playlist crap - when you remove Team Snipers for example, people who play that religiously are just going to leave the game, I know a few people who love it and haven't touched Halo 4 since it was removed. I just don't like their whole 'streamline' attitude for Halo 4, they only aim to have ten playlists at any given time, eight if you don't include the rotational playlists.

      • It seems to me that the lack of symmetrical maps really hurt halo 4. Particularly BTB. Also it seems like the "small" maps could be used in BTB. I know everyone moans about complex but it feels about like it's the size of Zanzibar/Last Resort. Does anyone else get that feel from complex? Note - I'm just complex as a specific example I don't think all the "small" maps would work.

        • My biggest issues with the maps is that there is almost no sense of "flow". The initial rush feels very Halo, going for the power weapons that drop, but after that it devolves into a free for all with relatively little sense of strategy. I personally find what MLG is doing with Halo 4 to be genius - the core is Halo, spawning the players with balanced loadouts having to fight for control of set weapon spawns, but then allowing the player to customize their experience with ordinance drops. It is genius - the AAs fit fairly seamlessly into the sandbox in that fashion, rather than being seriously disruptive and breaking map flow. Jet Pack just doesn't work in Halo, that's all that needs to be said about that. You shouldn't spawn with a weapon that can one hit kill. So on and so forth for the major outstanding issues. As long as 343 helps correct major outstanding bugs, if the next map pack is good, and 343 is able to push out the MLG playlist and update with MLGs specifications on a weekly basis (instead of quarterly), Halo 4 will be in a good place in my mind.

        • To be honest they need to introduce a better ranking system than no life it to get the highest rank, bring back halo 3! They are making games to simple and not enough of a challenge with no way of telling a players skill, people don't want simple they want to improve and there is not reason to in halo 4. The thing which brought me to and kept me playing today in halo 3 was the struggle to reach a high rank.

        • The maps seem too convoluted compared to Bungie's maps. The lack of significant landmarks confuses me. In the few simple maps, they feel too simple and tacky. I'm just not digging the maps. I just think that Bungie did a much better job with maps, finding the happy medium between interesting and simple.

          As far as playlists are concerned I'm annoyed with the rotational playlists moving in and out. When they bring team snipers, doubles, and griffball in they should keep them there permanently and then merge the CTF with the Oddball playlist, throw King of the Hill gametypes in, and call it team objective. Like you said, I miss true BTB with objective gametypes. As far as changes to the core gameplay are concerned I really don't see them making fundamental changes, like removing random ordnance or personal ordnance. Keeping that in mind, I hope they nerf the boltshot, fix the camo glitch and maybe weaken it a bit too, and do something to make the plasma pistol weaker in big team. The plasma pistol is fine in normal slayer but it's impossible to use a vehicle for more than 15 seconds without getting plasma pistoled in big team infinity slayer unless you're in a gauss hog or scorpion. I think vehicle combat has reached an all time low in Halo 4 for this reason.

          What 343 can do better? Remove ordinance out of BTB, make everyone start out with the same weapon, get rid of lolinstantspawns, get rid of perks, and get rid of the randomness of the multiplayer. I doubt they are going to change it.

          • Having objectives in BTB is a start, even if it's just CTF, Extraction, or KOTH. With Assault gone I think those would be the only objective gametypes that would work well with BTB.
