•
Posted by: LifeSong Can you take more than one person per console onto Xbox Live with you? If so, do they need a gamertag? Halo allows you to take guests online, but what about Marathon? Anyone able to test this and let me know?
All three split-screen guest spots are there. HD stuff was all amazing. I especially like the lighting on the... Green... Swamp monster things "rawr I don't even need a mouth to eat you aarrggggarggrgargg-gaaggrg Halflife zombies got nothing on this -blam!- aaagrgrggrgg." [Edited on 08.02.2007 7:18 PM PDT]

 • The combination of fast player speed, one faceted graphics and high framerate made me turn the demo off in five minutes. The words "Nuasiating" and "dizzying" come to mind. I'm sure it's fun, but I've played everything from RPGs to Flight Sims, and this is the first game that has ever made me DIZZY.

 • Go ahead and play Durandal, you'll be amazed at how many levels in the multiplayer you recognize from Halo... This game is freaking amazing, and I can't wait. Anybody with a 360 who fails to download it is just admitting that they fear me owning them online. Look for me Wednesday night, I'll be there wasting fools.

 • Yeah, great, now can we have Halo 1(CE) please? Just the multiplayer levels over Live would suffice. Thanks.

 •
Posted by: Hippieman Seriously, download the DirectX Texture Tool (part of the DirectX XDK) and open up the Marathon 2 DDS files and look at them. Rarely was anything redrawn, just smudged around. The only advantage Alpeh One has over us is they use 1024X1024 textures and we use 512X512. (This is due to the 150 MB file size limit Arcade games have, otherwise we'd use 1024 textures).
Well, yeah I know that. They are very much the same wall textures as the originals with a few touchups, but that's not my point. All I'm saying is that they were all in almost exactly the right place in the case of the original release and in Aleph One, all of them making sense in their proper place. All of it familiar. None of the original placement/alignment of any of the textures were changed in Aleph One from what I can tell. From the screenshots of thes XBL arcade re-release, though, it seems like they changed a couple things I wish they'd have left alone. Take the footage of the game from the E3 2007 arcade montage trailer. While you can still clearly tell it's Waterloo Waterpark, it looks different. And some of it not in a good way. Some of the textures(albeit a few) are incongruous with the original or simply out of alignment in varying degrees. It also seems darker than I remember it being. Really, I don't mind the cosmetic changes to the textures themselves that much at all, it's just the placement and lighting that I hope they do right. Lastly, make no mistake, I greatly appreciate their going to the extent that they have to bring it to the 360. I'm greatful for it. So I really don't have much room to complain. I just was always hoping for essentially a port of Aleph One to the arcade. Meaning all of this that I've mentioned is basically wishful thinking on my part. It's up to you to agree or disagree with it. It doesn't really matter to me. I'm still most likely going to get it regardless of the outcome. There's obviously other things about it that will be great improvements. Some of it you really wouldn't be able to tell just by screens. All of which I'd likely be pretty stoked about. I always just tend to frown a bit when I see a door texture used where I don't think it should be, or if it's a couple inches out of alignment, or if something's there that wasn't before. Nothing I can't get past really. Just "nitpicking" as it were. [Edited on 07.26.2007 1:00 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Count Rolland Aleph One: Art. This: Dear god I hope this isn't as botched as the screens make it out to be... The textures look like they're all over the place to me. I mean, in the originals and Aleph one updates, it looked like they went over every last surface with a fine toothed comb. This however looks liked it's been hurriedly glued together out of whatever textures were most convenient at the time.... Kind of like looking at the Mona Lisa redone by a 1st year college art student with fingerpaint. O.o Maybe it's not a final version......?*fingers crossed* Maybe I'm being too harsh. I dunno.
Hu? Have you looked at the Aleph One textures? Most of them are just rescaled original textures with Sharpen, Noise and some random Photoshop Filter. The Marathon 1 Aleph One textures were great, but it went downhill from there. Seriously, download the DirectX Texture Tool (part of the DirectX XDK) and open up the Marathon 2 DDS files and look at them. Rarely was anything redrawn, just smudged around. •
Posted by: homocidalham
Posted by: slipknotoo1 doom ripoff!
What would you rather have? A run through a couple of hallways blasting everything that moves, or an excursion through a geothermal plant where you have to shut down the pumps and run your ass off before you take a lava bath, and then help your allies take over the facility above? Doom is to Marathon as tic-tac-tow is to chess. Better level design, infinitely better story that actually develops in the game, actual missions, actual environmental variation (though you won't see it as much in m2 as you would see it in M1 or MI), a much better physics engine, and deeper gameplay mechanics. Don't call it a doom ripoff.
Also well said. *salaam* Spoken like a true patriot I might add. Sry for double posting btw, but the first one was just anger at the many ignorant that I needed to to get off my chest. Better now. As for my thoughts, I was personally expecting/hoping for an Aleph One port to the arcade. In my opinion it's the best representation of the series thus far... But this new engine and stuff... I dunno...I feel suspicious. It looks way different. I'm crossing my fingers hoping I'm not seriously disappointed when they do make this available(date, n-e-1?) Looking at some of the screens they showed, it is somewhat difficult for me, as a longtime Marathon fan, to identify what I'm seeing as Marathon 2. Alright, a brief disclaimer before I rant. I know all the good people at Freeverse are surely doing their best on this project and I heartily appreciate this effort at bringing back one of the greatest classics. Plz don't hate me for saying this, but I can't seem to get it out of my head any other way. Aleph One: Art. This: Dear god I hope this isn't as botched as the screens make it out to be... • Thank god for the crosshair-off toggle... :) To anyone whining about the graphics or "this game sux cause it's old", just because something isn't the newest and latest doesn't mean its worth passing over. You can have all the flashy visuals and big guns you want, but there's no substitute for solid gameplay. Granted, there's a lot of nostalgia riding on this one, but DEFINITELY play it if you haven't already done so thousands of times :)

 •
Posted by: the_Joe Marathon XBLA and Halo 3 the same year!! *head explodes from awe* I wonder, will they have a vidmaster award? like, an award for completeing all the vidmaster levels, or could it be doing all the levels without dying or saving (a TRUE vidmaster challenge, to be sure!) but, will there be a run button to hold down? lol. for that matter, will it have all 5 levels of difficulty? (yes, its true vidmasters, there is actually FIVE! total carnage isnt for everyone, apparently.) oh, and what i've been screaming for weeks now: WHEN IS RELEASE DATE!!!!?!!?!!?! its cruel, keeping it from me.... p.s. anyone interested at all, check out Aleph One! its multiplatform, they even got it for linux users! and with the high-res textures and openGL support, it actually looks pretty sharp for a game thats almost 13 years old
Here's some good instructions for downloading if you're not too sly with a computer. Created by QuickSilver:
Posted by: Quicksilver4648 HERE Go there to download the Aleph One game engine and the three games. 1. Download the Aleph One game engine. To do this click on your operating system, Mac, Windows, or Linux. 2. Download the three versions of Marathon. 3. Open the Aleph One folder and copy the AlephOne.exe file. Past the file in the folder of each game. 4. To play, go to the folder of the game you wish to play and click on the AlephOne.exe. 5. You will need to change the default controls, they suck. *Tip*: To play multi player, open the Marathon: Infinity (3) game and use the multi player in this game. Nobody plays online with the other versions of the game (1 or 2). When you play 8 player online, the game lags kind of bad. That is why I can't wait till it releases on Xbox Live Arcade where the online is secure and strong.
