I'm with you, man... it was REALLY unclear if multiple players were able to start Matchmaking. If you have 3 players and try Campaign, the game lets you know there are too many. Same with multiple people on Lone Wolves. IT WOULD LET YOU KNOW. Big props to Bungie for letting us sit through 10 minutes of unsuccessful Matchmaking with a friend. =P /slap
