• This is exactly what I've been waiting to see. I've aspired to work at Bungie since Pathways Into Darkness, after graduation I'll be going to a JC then off to UCLA for 3D art. I feel that a UC school will give me the edge on the competition. Oh yeah, and the fact that I'm a perfectionist when it comes to art and what not won'y hurt either ;-]

 • great interview!!! I've been searching for info like this (being a puget-sound local) but hadn't really found anything concerning what recruiters for ms/etc look for in an applicant, so thanks for posting this. Helps quite a bit - boosted my optimism again

 •
Posted by: DANO555666 Thanks Bunge, I've been looking at a jarb waaaaaaaaaay over there ever since I got into Halo, though, I'm not a programmer or a guy with a huge degree, just a high school diploma...so.........yeah, However I'm a great artist, been drawing ever since I could hold a dam pencil (HB FTW) and acing sculpture, paint, various forms of printmaking and such, and just recently picked up Photoshop and am getting extremely good at 2D art, textures and unwrapping and painting 3D content. Now I'm starting to learn Maya, build levels, unwrapping level geometry, concepting, painting and applying textures to the levels. I'm also quite well grounded with your HEK and Blam! engines. Anyway, I have a point to all this: Point is - does a person like me who has The Skillz™ but only did high School need the big fancy shmancy degrees if they've got the love, passion, skills and drive for art and game design? I sure hope not :( People like that allways would flourish under the wing of such a large team of talented people. Thanks :)
your pretty much in the same boat as I am, (l read my post on the second page), like you I have the skills in drawing and painting designs and defiantly have a passion for concept design (just need to get some experience in software such as painter IX studios, but I do work in Photoshop every now and then)

 • "Spelling and grammar was..." Your grammar is incorrect because the word "was" applies to multiple subjects, so it should be replaced with the word "were." So next time you feel like correcting someone's grammar, (and yes, the author of the update did exhibit poor grammar skills), make sure that YOU check the bullet points from the recruiter. But what's the point in that anyway? It's just going to be read by some mindless gamers...

 • Oh my god! Spelling and grammer was pointed out several times in this article but yet I cringe when I read it... please, at least check your bullet points from the recruiter. Whew, that's off my chest.

 • Ya quick question. WHY IS BUNGIE HIRING??? This is May, Halo 3 ships in late September...there is absolutely no reason for bungie to still be needing personel to work on Halo 3, this late in the design process. Which leaves only a few options. 1. Several key members of Bungie are leaving, either after Halo 3 ships, or possibly even before. 2. Bunige is gearing up for something after Halo 3, which would obviously raises more questions than it answers.

 • I've got a question for Bungie... If you would, focus on the engineering section of your staff. Would you ever hire someone who doesn't have a bachelors degree? Would they have to have had plenty of experience already? Is it totally ridicuous? [Edited on 05.24.2007 4:59 AM PDT]

 • Interesting read I would love to be a concept designer; most of my work is science fiction military concept. So obviously some of the sketches I have done have been greatly inspired by halo. I mostly produce pen and ink graphic style designs but I can also work in acrylic, although I am hoping to get some experience in how to use software such as Painter IX Studios to produce some more work in colour. I am going to do an art degree after I have finished my national diploma in art and design. Cheers Frankie and Kari for the article and giving me some interesting insight. • I'd never want to work in the Game Industry... I'd end up in a corner modelling door hinges for 3 years, and then at crunch be informed that the doors are now all 5px taller as of 2 seconds ago, so I have 5 minutes to redo all my door hinges or they ship the game without door hinges and then my carpal tunnel finally seizes my entire forearm, and then I'm out of work until someone else needs a 3D modeller with door hinge experience. And I get a super awesome robot arm to replace my broken one. But I wouldn't have insurance coverage... And so I'd just have a floppy arm with not so super awesome super bloated joints, and be unemployed with only three years and five minutes [exactly] of door hinging experience under my belt. :( [Edited on 05.23.2007 11:47 PM PDT]

 • I am currently an undergrad studying computer science at my local university. I still have quite sometime before graduating to decide about this but it still racks my brain... should I go on to grad school or start getting my foot in the door of the industry? I do appreciate the article you posted, I just have to ask... is it very common to find folks in the industry with their masters degree in computer science (from your experience)? Also, which says more: Bachelors degree with 5 to 8 years in the industry or someone with a fresh and newly minted masters degree?

 • Seeker - I highly recommend getting started with the Maya personal learning edition. There's also a MotionBuilder personal learning edition - which is an easy way to learn some of the dynamics of character animation. Plus, the sample characters in MB are already rigged and ready to be animate, which lets you focus on keyframing and things like that. Also, you get to see how mocap gets applied to characters, and how you can make changes to it. If you're in L.A. ... check out the Gnomon Workshop. I think the classes are pricey (they also have DVD tutorials) but they are well regarded in the industry. good luck!

 • I would like to become an Animator one day. I'm in the 12th grade as of now. I'm thinking of going to FullSail to study Animation and hopefully become a video game Animator. After becoming an Animator and gaining several years of experience, I plan to apply for Lead Animator. That's my dream position right there--Lead Animator. I would love to work for Bungie someday. If I DID ever work for Bungie, where would I have to go to work?(where Bungie Studios located? I live in Los Angeles California) [Edited on 05.23.2007 3:18 PM PDT]

 • I feel SO sorry for the recruiter because she has to deal with a bunch of retared gamers! "Yeah Im relly good at games and stuf...uh...I lik playin games...Halo is lots of fun I do it al day long...uh...yah i think im relly smart you shood hire me" Hey gamer losers, just because you suck at everything but gaming doesn't mean you can work for a game studio...the rest of the people in this country need people working at Taco Bell and gas stations!
