The Winds of Change

Many changes are coming to the 7th Column. It gets a new look, a new forum system, a new security role system, and a different user database system (now called Resources). Like all change, though, we're going to lose some things, at least in the short term. Most notable is the loss of the event system - although neat, it was hardly used at all by the majority of groups, so it will not be available after the transfer. All 7th Column fanclubs will be affected by these changes. First, any chapter with less than three active members will be deleted, including all their data. Second, as we are moving the fanclubs to run in the new forum system, any existing forum posts will be deleted. Sorry, but that's the way it will have to be. Archive anything you want to repost later! Third, only news stories from 4/12/2004 and on will be transferred, the rest will be deleted. The biggest change will come with user resources, formerly referred to as user databases. Before, each fanclub was allowed 100 individual resources with 1000 rows of data in each. Unfortunately, due to the rapid growth of bungie.net, we cannot continue to use those high limits. Furthermore, user resources had many different templates for data. In the interests of simplicity, several of those were removed because they had nothing to do with the 7th Column's goal of fostering LAN events and Bungie-related shennanigans. Going forward, there will be user resource types. The first five are limited to one per group, with a 250 entry maximum: Guest Book, Contact Info, FAQ, Links, and Articles. The Guest book, FAQ, and Links Resource types function as before. The Contact Info has expanded fields to allow for more information than before. The Articles resource type now allows 10000 characters of text per entry. The sixth resource type is is the Custom Columns type. By far the most popular resource type, each fanclub will have 25 available slots for these Custom columns resources, Each of those slots can contain 100 rows of 6 columns. We apologize for the lack of the gametypes database - it will most likely return in a future update. What does this mean to you? Well, obviously there are new limits to data. If your resources go over the limits, then they won't be transferred. You can try and delete items to bring your group under the limits, but I recommend that you simply do nothing. After the migration, see if you are missing anything, and then request your resource datafiles - We will export all existing user resources to XML and make them available via a means to be announced in the future. Only groups that meet the 3 member minimum criteria will have resource XML files available. So, if the migration misses anything important, you'll still have a copy to do touch up work. In closing, it is important to note that although we appreciate your feedback for the 7th Column, there can be no exceptions to any of these limits or migration procedures. We will answer your questions posted in the forum thread attached to this news article, but again, please do not ask for exceptions to the migration rules. We thank you for you patience as we take this step forward.

 • Here's a more practical question: Is there any way you could get me a backup of some sort of all my news posts? You see, since most the work that I've put into my [rul=bungie.net/fanclub/imperatores]chapter is about to be simply wiped clean as if it never existed, I now have the daunting job of copying and pasting each of my 200+ news posts into Wordpad documents. And while I'm sure that everyone else who cares about their site's history will have a blast spending hours copying and pasting, I'm rather strange: I probably won't. So, if my desperate attempt to keep the chapter I love seems a bit too desperate, I'd appreciate it if you could help me out. I really would appreciate it. Thanks, Poocho :)

 • "I leave home for a few days...." I'm just finishing vacation in the dang mountains for a week and look what happens...the new hotness almost totally flies by me! Well. All the stuff I had planned for my chapter will have to wait, won't it? That really sucks. Good luck on the new stuff, Bungie!

 • BRING BACK THE EVENTS FEATURE! The only reason it is not getting a lot of use is because the game for which events are posted is almost 3 years old. Keep the Events feature there and you will see it being used extensively come November 9th. My chapter still uses the feature weekly and is the main reason I and the only reason most members of my chapter keep coming back to the site. If you get rid of the feature you will see a huge lack of interest in the 7th Column.

 • Shame there's no Q&A database - Marty's was brilliant. And I agree with the Events remarks, but I suppose a Cusom DB could be used instead.

 • Same reason, we need that event feature. Especially when there going to be a big explosion of new people interested in the world of Halo, we will have a big boom of new members. Events is how we meet members we never met in person. I think now, I might lose some members during this wait and have to keep contacting while the wait for the chapters to come back. I'm also have a problem with the create a new chapter coming back. People won't think about looking for chapters but more like creating there own which would most like be useless in 3 months. I hope there's more of a filtering for newbies making there own chapters like for example be a veteran for 3 months then be allowed to make your own. -Also....Hey Irvine, you wouldn't be from Irvine in Orange County, California would you?

 • Watch the n-word. Anyway, we need the chapter creation to come back - some people just want their own chapter, while others wouldn't want to experience the effort of maintaining one.

But maybe some of those that try will see how hard it is to maintain one and leave it to the pros. Hehe. I didn't think about that.

 • I don't think that counts. Maybe it does. I think maybe it's tracked by active posters. It might just be last login though (by some type of time constraint). Or maybe I have no idea and I'm taking wild shots? Probably the last one.

 •
Posted by: PsionicPhyre I like the fact that the 7thcol is getting revamped, but I wish I'd seen this ahead of time and been able to save some of my newsposts...
Oh I agree. Isn't it considerate of them to have given us a whole whopping 4-5 days to backup all of our treasured history? Isn't it nice to see how much they value the countless hours each of us hard-working founders and chapter staff members have put into our "homes"? Do I sound a bit bitter? Yeah, just a little. I guess there must be something wrong with me. I mean, how could I have been so stupid as to think when I was writing up those hundreds of news posts that they meant anything? That they were worth posting and keeping? That they were more than something to fill the time when a new and supposedly better seventh column came around? I guess I must be crazy to have actually taken pride in my work. After all, the guys with the power thought it was all worth the glory of briefly seeing the inside of their Bungie Server Recycle Bin. Thanks for the support. But like I said, 4-5 days was a generous amount of time for us loons who took our chapter founding seriously to back up the tiny morsels in our chapter that we saw as somewhat worth of memorial. I mean, I was easily able to find time to get it done; I forced myself to get up at 2:30 Tuesday morning when the computer was available to go through every single news post that I've ever written and save what was worth keeping. After totalling that with the few chances I had before that to get busy on it, I only spent a quick 3-4 hours doing it. In the end, I saved 168 files: 1 file per worth news post. That was 80% of all the news I and my co-founder authored. I would've saved more, but around 4:00 a.m. I started to give in to my sleepiness and skip a few. I'll probably regret that later. You know, I had a whole (civil, of course) speech thought up in my head of what I was going to say in this post; but once again it's getting late, and I'll have to keep this short. You know, I'm sure Halo 2's gonna be great. And I'm fairly sure the New Hotness won't be half bad. But can any of that really make up for what they're taking away from us? Namely, or history and our memories. I don't want to get too into the whole removing the Event system problem, but I'll just say this: Just because everyone loved the vehicles so much in Halo 1 is no reason you should simply remove the weapons in Halo 2. Of course, in Bungie's defense, they've proven themselves to be intelligent people who always know what they're doing. Perhaps things won't be as bad as the latest news post made it sound (was it just me, or did everyone imagine Achronos saying all those words in a very apologetic tone?). It's likely that they'll provide a feature to cover the elements of the Events feature in an even better way. We'll all just have to tough it our for another week or so. There is no need for anyone to take offense at this post or to delete it; I worked hard to keep it civil, and I never sunk to the level of a flamer. I was simply expressing my opinions, which could effectively be ignored. Just my thoughts, Poocho :)

 • ....it probably wouldn't sound "nice", if they even know what the "n-word" meant. Kinda hard to be offended by a word like newbie don'tcha think? -"oh no, everyone is jerk because they discriminated me by calling me a newbie. I'll never come to these forums ever again!"(runs off crying in the corner) Unless they have one hell of an ego to argue about it. I can understand the rules thing, obviously I didn't bother to read them to even know that was even a rule. Even then, it wasn't like I used the African n-word which I first thought(whoever replied back to me for using newbie) meant. Again I didn't know and in the future I will obey the "Laws of the Forums", la dee da

And it is used to shun people out of the community, not invite them in.

 • Even though there are many ways to say new guy such as newb and noob (*gasp* I just said bad words in the forum! I feel so dirty...) there are only two types of these kind of people. Ass and friendly (guess what you are). I really don't see the harm in such, cable TV unfit, words. I don't say them myself, but I don't see what the big deal is. Some may get discouraged and leave, yes. But if that little bit made them leave, then they probally wouldn't have stayed long anyway. I do know that some people take it too far, but then there are those that jump up for the noobs (oh the damage to young ears) and defend them against the flamers that attack them, thus taking the heat. This doesn't happen very often, or at least not often enough. I think that needs to change, but it probably won't. I can only do my part. No matter how much I hear people say they hate noob and newb (Bad words! Cover my ears for me! It burns!), I don't see the problem. Just my little thoughts. SO THERE! MUHAHAHAHA-PW!!!!
