The Winds of Change

Many changes are coming to the 7th Column. It gets a new look, a new forum system, a new security role system, and a different user database system (now called Resources). Like all change, though, we're going to lose some things, at least in the short term. Most notable is the loss of the event system - although neat, it was hardly used at all by the majority of groups, so it will not be available after the transfer. All 7th Column fanclubs will be affected by these changes. First, any chapter with less than three active members will be deleted, including all their data. Second, as we are moving the fanclubs to run in the new forum system, any existing forum posts will be deleted. Sorry, but that's the way it will have to be. Archive anything you want to repost later! Third, only news stories from 4/12/2004 and on will be transferred, the rest will be deleted. The biggest change will come with user resources, formerly referred to as user databases. Before, each fanclub was allowed 100 individual resources with 1000 rows of data in each. Unfortunately, due to the rapid growth of bungie.net, we cannot continue to use those high limits. Furthermore, user resources had many different templates for data. In the interests of simplicity, several of those were removed because they had nothing to do with the 7th Column's goal of fostering LAN events and Bungie-related shennanigans. Going forward, there will be user resource types. The first five are limited to one per group, with a 250 entry maximum: Guest Book, Contact Info, FAQ, Links, and Articles. The Guest book, FAQ, and Links Resource types function as before. The Contact Info has expanded fields to allow for more information than before. The Articles resource type now allows 10000 characters of text per entry. The sixth resource type is is the Custom Columns type. By far the most popular resource type, each fanclub will have 25 available slots for these Custom columns resources, Each of those slots can contain 100 rows of 6 columns. We apologize for the lack of the gametypes database - it will most likely return in a future update. What does this mean to you? Well, obviously there are new limits to data. If your resources go over the limits, then they won't be transferred. You can try and delete items to bring your group under the limits, but I recommend that you simply do nothing. After the migration, see if you are missing anything, and then request your resource datafiles - We will export all existing user resources to XML and make them available via a means to be announced in the future. Only groups that meet the 3 member minimum criteria will have resource XML files available. So, if the migration misses anything important, you'll still have a copy to do touch up work. In closing, it is important to note that although we appreciate your feedback for the 7th Column, there can be no exceptions to any of these limits or migration procedures. We will answer your questions posted in the forum thread attached to this news article, but again, please do not ask for exceptions to the migration rules. We thank you for you patience as we take this step forward.

 • Sounds great. It's good that they're moving forward, not backward, upward, not forward and ever twirling twirling twirling....
[All 7th Column fanclubs will be affected by these changes.
So, my question is, how is an 'acxtive user' defined? in other words, how is it decided if a user is an active user?

 • Losing the event system really bites! I thought that was the whole point of the groups!? Well that is the point of the group I am a part of. We have an event every month still. When H2 comes out that number will increase expodentially. I guess events will probably move to news posts. I will also miss the gametypes. It didn't really get used to it's potential so I guess it's not that big of a deal. But I guess I am glad the new hotness is coming... if I have to give up the event system for rankings on XBL.... guess it's a good trade off. Xraf

 • Ya know what? I joined RIGHT after Bungie stopped allowing you to post chapters in the 7th column. I have been checking on a daily basis (for around 3 months) for my being able to post a chapter. And now, my patience has been rewarded. Thanks Bungie. And Thanks to the community for making this web site the most addicting web site I have EVER had the pleasure to join.

 • Great, now every active member in my chapter is going to want me to join theirs....bah. I decided to make my chapter days before creation was taken offline =), but I've done so much that this might damage my chapter...I don't think it'll be too bad, I'll survive. The biggest problem is going to be for chapters with a custom database per alphabet letter....

 • I'm kinda sad and glad that all the forum posts will be gone, but it will at least clean up New Mombassa.

 •
Posted by: DrummDragon I'm kinda sad and glad that all the forum posts will be gone, but it will at least clean up New Mombassa.
No. It won't. This upgrade is for chapters only. As much as many would like to see New Mombasa wiped, it won't solve the problem there, and the upgrade is only giving chapters good forums. I hope these forums are incorporated with the upgrade, that would certainly make my day.

 • OK, I have compiled a little list of questions that I'd like answering, if you wouldn't mind. [li]Will the new forums operate the same as these ones? Will we still get Custom rows databases? Will we be able to give out custom member titles (instead of just member, staff, moderator)? Will the link list tricks still work? Will Chapter Founders provide an updated guide (I'd be willing to help)? Will there be an updated Theme builder released? Will we see new themes? Will members be able to found multiple chapters?[/li] I appreciate the fact that you might want to keep some of this secret, but I would also like to have some of this clarified. I thank you for your time.

We do a LAN weekly and the Events feature makes it extremely easy to plan for and get a head count. Without the Events feature, I don't know if we'll continue to need or even use the 7th Column. What good is the site if can't be used to correlate LANs or Live events? If it wasn't for the Events feature of the 7th Column our chapter would have quit using the site long ago. Please bring the feature back Bungie, for it is the strengh of the 7th Column. After all, "we do want to play together."

Yes, this is going to lose a lot of chapters, but they obviously need the space.

 • The loss of the event feature is not good at all. I have had a chapter founded specifically for Halo 2 XBL events and now that Halo 2 is almost out we don't have the event feature? Gah, that hurts. Well I guess I could just post in in these new forums or news... Also my chapters will be fine but I am just wondering how active would you consider active? You guys said a chapter needs 3 active members. Active meaning 3 members to have voted in a poll in the last 3 months, or 3 members to have posted news in the last 5 weeks etc. Losing the majority of my databases is going to suck a lot. I've got databases that I've slowly been adding to for 2 years which are just going to vanish. (Like keeping track of past poll results, various fan fiction etc.) Although a chapter that has been around for 2 yeas like my own, a lot of older posts in databases are from members long gone so starting fresh may be a good thing. I also hope for many new themes with Halo 2 coming out. I am sure once I see the updated column I'll love it more than I think I will. It'll take some time getting used to a change after the same chapter layout since I joined.

 • No more event posting? Are you nuts?! That is the ONLY reason I and half of the people in CO use Bnet... YOu are making a huge mistake. If there isn't anymore event hosting I am out of here.

Having the column is a privilege anyway, and you can't blame Bungie if they have to get rid of things to make room.

 • Here's a more practical question: Is there any way you could get me a backup of some sort of all my news posts? You see, since most the work that I've put into my [rul=bungie.net/fanclub/imperatores]chapter is about to be simply wiped clean as if it never existed, I now have the daunting job of copying and pasting each of my 200+ news posts into Wordpad documents. And while I'm sure that everyone else who cares about their site's history will have a blast spending hours copying and pasting, I'm rather strange: I probably won't. So, if my desperate attempt to keep the chapter I love seems a bit too desperate, I'd appreciate it if you could help me out. I really would appreciate it. Thanks, Poocho :)
