I think we can benefit very well from the example of lions. In a pack of lions, the alpha male gets to mate with all of the females. If the lion was looking for a sense of intimacy (which is a very complex emotion by the way), why would he go around banging all of the females? If he really wanted to feel intimate, he wouldn't be doing that. Now horses are known to groom each other on the necks, but that does not mean they are being intimate. That just means they are being friendly and affectionate. Wouldn't you agree?
