Halo 2 Vista FAQ

Since Halo 2 Vista is getting closer and closer, and certain things have changed since we last updated the Vista FAQ, we thought we'd give PC players some more details on what to expect from the forthcoming Vista conversion. New info inside!

 •
Will it be possible for players to create their own campaign or co-op levels for Halo 2? No, the user-created content tools are exclusively for multiplayer maps and game types
Can anyone else spot the throbbing fail in that Q/A? C'mon guys, not everyone likes multiplayer. What about those of us who want to make something, and then blow it up without fifteen 12-year-olds spouting "n00b," "lol," "f4g," "omg," and "rokkit hor3." I know quite a few people who bought Halo and Halo 2 only for its story. They avoid multiplayer like the plague for the aforementioned reason. If scripting support for the HEK wasn't found out, I'd have left the Halo CE modding scene a long time ago. Being able to create your own universe with your own story is a very, very cool thing.

 • Also, in addition to what Polar said, single player cinematics are the most amazing way possible to showcase a new multiplayer map. Smooth camera point based movement showcasing a map is a great way to record a promo or teaser. edit: It's all making sense now. The update was bumped out of the way by a humpday challenge to try and make it less conspicuous. [Edited on 11/9/2006]

 • Tis' a sad day for H2V. The update just killed my inner child. I would delve on this issue but it seems like all the previous posters have covered ground of how I feel.

 • Let me reiterate what I said in the other topic in The Maw here, although the possibility of someone seeing it due to the fact that it was the top story for less than two hours is not that great. I don't understand at all why you have to close the door on the modding community like this. Many games out there today and many of those coming out after Vista's launch are coming with fully featured SDKs. You have seen how far people have come with these in the past, so why stop here? Why go the extra mile to disable something that would be completely harmless to leave in and has a ton of potential? Can you even give a real, non-bull-blam!- filled answer? Better yet, can we please have a thread where we can ask questions and get REAL answers from some of the developers? For many, Halo 2 Vista was being viewd as chance at improvement on what many did not like about Halo 2 for the Xbox. Not anymore. All that it looks like we can benefit from now are aesthetics, dedicated servers, and some custom maps. What major things does Halo 2 Vista have over Halo Custom Edition now other than enhanced graphics? From what we can make out of this FAQ/update, you have all failed us.

 •
Will Halo 2 for Windows Vista add online co-op? No, it won’t. In addition, all split-screen modes have been disabled for Halo 2 on Vista. Why did you disable split-screen and co-op modes in Halo 2 for Windows Vista? Playing cooperatively through any console game in a living room environment surrounded by friends and family is a markedly different experience than gathering around the average home PC. In addition, eliminating split-screen gaming removed the most challenging performance problem from Halo 2, and gave the H2V developers room to improve graphics and audio in the game.
What no Co-op!! That was worst thing about halo PC. Why do this again for halo 2 PC ? What do you mean by performance problems for the PC? Xbox Has: CPU: Intel Pentium III 733-MHz processor technology with streaming SIMD extensions Graphics processor: 233-MHz, custom-designed X-Chip, developed by Microsoft and Nvidia Total memory: 64MB of RAM (unified memory architecture) PC has : Two or more 2+ GHz processors with SSE SSE2 ... Graphics processor: GeForce 8800 GTX with 768MB of GDDR3 at 575MHz Total Memory 768+2048 = 2816 MB of ram The PC has Way more power. Why not just let the frame rate drop in co-op? 125 to 63 fps is no big deal. It is just like moving from no AA to 16xMSAA What the audio on the xbox was fine? so why are you spending so long upgrading the audio? [Edited on 11/9/2006]

 • No Auto Aim. PLEASE! I think I speak for 99% of decent gamers out there when I say that. I wish you would talk about the net code some... how it differs from Halo PC/ Halo 2 on Xbox... Thanks for putting Anti-aliasing in Halo 2... something that was definitely needed in the first halo... /wouldn't mind new screenshots / benchmarks on how the game will run on diffrent PCs [Edited on 11/9/2006]
How will users get access to custom maps created by other players? We’re investigating our options here, but aren’t ready to discuss the details. It’s important for the H2V team to strike a balance between convenience and community-building. Security and performance concerns must also be addressed.
I guess I should order up more bandwidth and install another file mirror then? In all seriousness this, for me, is the 64 terabyte question. Being one of the community members most affected by it, I await your decision on this feature. Thank you for the update. [Edited on 11/9/2006]

Because they are trying to make this port as simple as can be, while even eliminating some features found from Halo 2 Xbox, they are not going to to bother with co-op because it deals with the netcode. To me, this honestly spells out that they aren't really doing anything different to the netcode this time around, which will be hilarious. "Hey kids, not only do you have to endure a crappy port once more with crappy netcode, but you'll have to pay to play online this time around!" Bungie just shat on H2V.

 • I would like to address another concern of mine here. This time, dealing with the dedicated server application. As you had stated in the FAQ...
The Dedicated Server runs as a service on Windows Vista, providing extremely basic “start and stop” functionality through the Windows UI. Most interesting aspects of a dedicated game are managed from the command line, either locally or remotely. These features will be documented at release.
Did you mean to specify that the server can only be run on Windows Vista, or were you just using Windows Vista as an example? There is absolutely NO REASON AT ALL why it shouldn't be able to run on a version of Windows later than Windows 2000. Windows 2000, Windows XP (Home and Pro), Windows Server 200x, and Windows Vista should all be capable of running a simple server application and if you are honestly considering making it run on Windows Vista only, you just shot yourselves in the foot...again.

 • I agree. I'm going to be building a Vista machine this spring and I was planning on using my current rig to provide a dedicated server for those times when I'm needing to host betas. That machine is running XP. Not only that, but what dedicated server company is going to jump on the Vista bandwagon just to support dedicated servers of one game?

 • And the PC community gets fracked over yet again. Lets review. No Co-op. Online or otherwise. Vista only. Not because of graphics, but for online Live Multiplayer. We have to pay for online multiplayer, for a PC platform FPS. No Co-op AUTO AIM. ON A PC SHOOTER. CONGRATULATIONS, YOU JUST BECAME THE LAUGHINGSTOCK OF THE PC SHOOTER COMMUNITY. EXPECT NO ONE OUTSIDE A RABID FANBOY TO EVER TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY AGAIN. Editing still using that horrific abortion of the HEK. I was a web developer for 7 years. I was part of the beta team for the very first version of InterDev. I was part of the beta team for the first generation of a MS studio development tool, and HEK is till the worst toolset I've ever tortured myself trying to use. What happened to the promises of an UnrealEd quality edition suite? Hopefull the makers of things like dotHalo and HMT will make Halo 2 versions of their tools. No new weapons or vehicles. Hell, even Halo PC managed that, and it's easily the worst mainstream FPS port of all time. No Co-op Game is Vista only, but has no DX10 features, meaning that the only reason it's Vista only is to screw you over with having to pay for online MP. No custom Single Player. What. The. Frak. Meh, like that won't be hacked withing 15 seconds anyway. WHy the hell not? I can't think of a single reason not to allow us to edit the SP campaign, and many many good reasons to do so. Are your egos' that fraking fragile you're afraid some modder will top you? Well, I guess you should have reason.... Dedicated servers are managed through the command line. What is this, 1997? Does Bungie have an internal team that spends all it's time sitting around trying to think of ways to make the game a failure on the PC platform, because if I wanted the game to flop in the PC market, this is exactly what I would have done. [ghetto edit]Oh Frack, I completely missed that part about the netcode. This will probably be a worse failure than Halo PC was. [Edited on 11/10/2006]

 • Seriously, NO AUTO AIM No co-op.. meh, oh well... Not too mad about that, most people will buy the game for the multiplayer anyway... I agree with the person above about "This is a VISTA ONLY game, WITHOUT DX10 Features". Seriously, if you're going to make Vista only, you better put some things that Only vista can do. I wouldn't mind having single player mods.. Some people don't like multiplayer! I, myself like multiplayer, but wouldn't mind playing a single player map that my buddy created! No new weapons.. meh.. don't care too much about that.. but please tone down the SMG some! I think the SMG made the game a bit unbalanced. /rant Just my opinion people

 • So, no comments Bungie? Personally I can't say that I blame you, as I don't know what I would say to try and justify this trainwreck. Did you learn nothing from Halo PC? Expect Halo 2 Vista to do just about as well. One more thing, don't count on the console kiddy fanbois crowd this time, the PC community is...not as forgiving. [Edited on 11/11/2006]

 • Didn't any of you notice? Bungie obviously knew this was going to be the general reaction; why do you think they added the Humpday news so quickly after the update for H2V? It certainly made it shadowed and not the main feature to first click on, and after a blank update from a few days ago, news of H2V has all but dissapeared, save if you actually visit this forum.

 • netcode? that is all that is stopping them? I strongly dissliked that Halo PC did not have Co-op... i makes doing stunts on the pc like "T2T" and a shade stuck on top a tree in guilty spartan so much harder (or impossible) to do. if the net code so hard to do WHY not let the netcode be "open source" Why has there been no replay to our post by "bungie"? KPaul or SketchFactor please reply!!

If the coop isn't there then its gonna be another Halo PC. the same thing over and over again... yea maybe new gametypes but they will drown out fast. My friend and I were gonna run Campaign on Legendary :'( Joe333 51
