So many people are quick to trash "casual" gamers who don't play [insert game franchise here] as somehow not being dedicated enough to gaming to be allowed to claim the "gamer" title. But that's a load of bollocks, really, isn't it?
I mean, I'm pretty old by the standards of people who enjoy video games enough to post on forums about them. Every day, I talk to dozens of people who never played a 90s Cliffy B-era Epic Megagames PC platformer. I bet only a handful of people on this site have even heard of Jill of the Jungle or Xargon or Jazz Jackrabbit, let alone played them through. But they call themselves "hardcore" gamers because they've played all of the however many CoD titles there are, which are so mainstream that it's laughable.
"Hardcore" is such an arbitrary standard. In my mind, if you want to play mainstream shooters and claim that you're a real gamer, you don't really have a leg to stand on when bashing people who enjoy Wii games or handhelds - or hell, even phone games, for that matter. If you weren't around for when gaming as we know it today was actually starting up, maybe you shouldn't be so quick to throw stones. Maybe we should all stop trying to judge who deserves to be called a real gamer and who doesn't and just enjoy our hobbies, right?

Couldn't agree with you more OP. Here, have a brofist. *Brofist*

Am I a "hardcore" gamer when all that I like to play is solo campaigns in games? Multiplayer isn't that fun anymore.
-
I find that people's definitions of hardcore and casual gamers vary significantly. Some consider hardcore gamers to invest loads of time into a games mechanics, while casuals don't. Some consider hardcores to play for competition, while casuals play for fun. Me? I consider hardcores to really appreciate the little nuances of a game, regardless of skill level, while casuals want cheap thrills and the equivalent of a Michael Bay movie. That being said, you're attention whoring, Jay.
Posted by: ODSTworrior94 I find it hard to care whether a player is hardcore or casual because... it's a damn video game.
Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter.
-
The only reason I hate people who lollygag while playing is because many games created now are catered toward those people (who are unfortunately the masses). It makes sense, because that is where the most revenue will be made, but I (and every other true-gamer) want a fun and competitive game that can hold our interest.
Posted by: Lies "Hardcore" is relative.
Only people who don't want to be casuals and aren't hardcore enough say this. Assume who you are, deal with it, casual.
Posted by: Kai Hiwatari What do you call someone who has been a gaming fan most of their life, has collectibles, action figueres, and merchandise, but never plays competitively?
People have the right to enjoy their hobbies however they like as long as they aren't hurting anyone, that's my point. I've always wanted to get into collecting, I think it'd be fun. Seems expensive, though. :P

"Hardcore" is relative. Hardcore has as much to do with attitude as it does with the chosen game. That being said, can't say I've ever heard of anyone calling CoD hardcore, or really seeing it outside of competitive events/games like MLG, where it is appropriate.

Saying you're a "hardcore" gamer because you play a lot of games is like saying you're a "hardcore" listener because you listen to a lot music. It's a bit ridiculous. The only people I would categorize as "hardcore" gamers are game developers, who not only play games but also spend hours developing and testing games.

Damn, dirty casuals.

filthy casual stay away from me! [Edited on 01.07.2013 5:44 PM PST]

I can see this is going to turn into a -blam!- storm, but me thinks Op wants it to.

You're one of those people that misinterprets arguments between two groups of people and labels one as "hardcore", a word which I'm sure you made up or took from one person who decided to call themselves that. No one dislikes "casuals" for not playing a certain game franchise or being serious enough to be considered a "hardcore" gamer. Stop being stupid.
-
A person who plays game's is a gamer. A person who play's to win most of the time is theoretically a hardcore gamer. Believe it or not, those of us who play to win aren't all -blam!-s, and attack others all the time. You are correct, I never played either of those games you mentioned, but that doesn't make me any less of a person. I also enjoy playing wii, and other systems. Also, just because I wasn't around for the start of gaming doesn't make my opinion less valid.

I've always been a social gamer at heart. more or less.
-
Hardcore gamer just means that you play, with your eyes 10 centimetres closer to the TV.
-
OP I noticed you're trying to take away fun from the internet.
-
I like to have fun but a little competition doesn't hurt.
