So many people are quick to trash "casual" gamers who don't play [insert game franchise here] as somehow not being dedicated enough to gaming to be allowed to claim the "gamer" title. But that's a load of bollocks, really, isn't it?
I mean, I'm pretty old by the standards of people who enjoy video games enough to post on forums about them. Every day, I talk to dozens of people who never played a 90s Cliffy B-era Epic Megagames PC platformer. I bet only a handful of people on this site have even heard of Jill of the Jungle or Xargon or Jazz Jackrabbit, let alone played them through. But they call themselves "hardcore" gamers because they've played all of the however many CoD titles there are, which are so mainstream that it's laughable.
"Hardcore" is such an arbitrary standard. In my mind, if you want to play mainstream shooters and claim that you're a real gamer, you don't really have a leg to stand on when bashing people who enjoy Wii games or handhelds - or hell, even phone games, for that matter. If you weren't around for when gaming as we know it today was actually starting up, maybe you shouldn't be so quick to throw stones. Maybe we should all stop trying to judge who deserves to be called a real gamer and who doesn't and just enjoy our hobbies, right?

You know what makes me laugh? When people don't know what #Gaming is.

Oh god Foman.

why the hell was this bumped

Damn I actually agree with Jay for once. People try and hate on kids and adults who play video games on their iphone/ipad. Face it, they ARE just as much gamers as we are.

Thank the universe this naive squirt no longer posts her stupidity here.
Posted by: ODSTworrior94 I find it hard to care whether a player is hardcore or casual because... it's a damn video game.
I cbf reading this thread but ill just say this. Hardcore gamer: someone who plays LOTS of games. Casual gamer: someone who plays games casually when they have the time. Anyway I agree with the op. [Edited on 01.08.2013 3:42 AM PST]

I agree, completely. I was playing games before some gamers today were even born. Yet so many are easy to say hey guyz I'm the best at this video game 1337. When really, who cares? Nostalgia glasses on/ I miss the adventure collection genre anyways. Fps is stale and boring now.

So using your logic, Car Enthusiasts that were around to drive the first cars ever made (assuming they were still alive) would have a better opinion than Car Enthusiasts today?
-
I always understand hardcore gamers as people who simply play games a lot and understand how to completely appreciate what they're playing. But then people dumb the term down when they call people who play "competitively" hardcore gamers, and I really don't know what the hell a hardcore gamer is now. I like to call myself a hardcore gamer but I don't want everyone thinking I'm a competitive douche that only plays multiplayer. Playing a single-player game no longer qualifies as being "hardcore" anymore, apparently.
-
Shush nerd. Nah, totally agree.
-
Being good at a game and playing games for a long time don't really have much in common unless the 'hardcore' gamer in question is both.
-
OP started "filthy casual"
-
So because people haven't played older games their not hardcore? I'm not sure what you mean could someone clarify?
-
The title of hardcore gamer has drastically changed ever since the FPS war started. It used to be a respectful title.

I was a bit late to the gaming party because when I was small my parents always got me game systems a generation behind. As such when the SNES came out that was when I got my SEGA Genesis. I don't think of myself as a casual or hardcore. The way I see it I'm in the gray area. I play a lot of AAA titles and dab in some of the larger indie titles such as FTL and Braid. But I'm not one of the gamers that believes that not holding an interest in lesser known titles make a person casual scum.
Posted by: halo3genius
Posted by: colbyrules8
Posted by: colbyrules8 None of you are hardcore gamers, I probably would be the closest one to a hardcore gamer if you take into account my prior gaming "adventures". I was ranked for 1v1ing on MW3 on When they had a ranked portion, they moved it though and I was ranked 9th in North America on here, if you want me to prove it just look at my gamertag here and go off of that and look at the rankings on either channel or just look for a video by sin bulletproof on SLB, he's on my FL and I actually trained him. Don't think I'm arrogant about that, because I'm not. I only bring it up in threads like this.
Just to make you guys mad.
It makes me laugh because you actually "trained" someone to be good in a video game. Don't take offense, though.
Well, it was on a national level... Also, it wasn't a straight up ," Come join my training program". I normally join matches and play a regular game in pub and after a while I just give a huge mass message out offering 800 MS points to anyone that can beat me in a 1v1 (it never happens because most players are casuals and I used to be continentally ranked). I normally beat the people that join pretty badly, around 20-5 is my average game messing around and quite a few of them try to add me or try to get me to teach them how to get better. So I just begin playing with them more and more and over time they get better but with Sin Bulletproof, he 1v1ed me more than ten times a day and took it pretty seriously.

I love attention, guys. Attention is great! Most people feel the same way. But that's another discussion for another time.
I don't mind if you like attention but I won't call you an attention whore or some other variation of it. That OK?
You can call me or not call me whatever you like, love. I don't mind.
