We've heard this as rumor before. Could there be some truth to it?
And how will this affect you in he next generation of consoles?
-
I don't see this as too big a problem, but it has issues. Reason For: Money will go directly to people who made it. Reason Against: Sales like the Steam sales will probably never happen. Also, GameStop works a supply-and-demand system based on rarity. I bought Bioshock 2 for $9, and titles like Gears 2 and COD4 were there for like $5. I highly doubt you'll ever see full retail older games go less than $20. And that's a shame because that's alot of what I buy. Edit: Also, GameStop had BF Bad Company 1 for $3. You think you'll ever see $3 in Games on Demand? [Edited on 01.04.2013 10:29 AM PST]
Posted by: dazarobbo If the profile ID is paired with the disc ID, that pairing would need to be stored somewhere. Obviously the best place to do that is on the disk, but if there's no network connection that pairing record can't be stored anywhere where it can be accessed by another console (which is also a problem since the latter would need a network connection too). So the only way of making this work is to change the media (Bluray, DVD, or whatever else they're using) from readable to writeable to store the pairing record on the disc itself. This way the console will be able to read the record from the disc after it has been written-to by another/the same console. That's probably going to lead to a jump in manufacturing (and subsequently purchase) costs, since writeable discs are a little bit more expensive than readable-only (IIRC) and the console disc drive will need to support write capabilities as well.
IIRC, they are planning to use RFID chips in the disc.

If Microsoft do this then I'll be buying less and less games. I only really buy pre-owned games.
Posted by: Incandescence
Posted by: brandorobot If this happens I might just have to go exclusively to PC.
Where the system allows no used games at all? Sound logic
Oh no, I can't buy used game :( I guess I'll just have to buy 6 games for 5 dollars in a Steam sale :(

That is besides the point though man. I have 2 xbox consoles. I know plenty of other households and families that have 2 of the same console. So you are telling me you would not be able to play the game on both consoles and you'd rather have to buy two copies?!? thats just bull.
xbox.com bro, xbox.com, plus wouldnt they just link the purchased game with your account and not the console itself? "but bace what if i get a new account/it get hacked wutdothen?" call support and get things straightened out OT: you guys need to just stop, seriously, its not the end of the world

More money for developers. Why is that a bad thing?

I honestly don't see how a patent like that can be legal, and I'm not even sure how thats even a patent.
-
that is just stupid. What if your account gets stolen or your console breaks down? Can't play your games anymore? I hate that they are trying to stop used games. They will kill themselves by doing this probably and shut out a lot of gamers who can't afford $70 games. I just hope xbox doesn't go this dumb route. I really don't play on my ps3 much so I could live without a ps4. I would not support a company pulling such crap.

European blocks on such things will prevent this ever coming to fruition (it's really illegal). Just expect more DLC as console gaming swims down the river of failure into the annals of history.
I live in the EU, but seriously, this is just retarded.

What if your friend wants to borrow the game?

I hope they get sued if they actually do that. Executives are so ungodly greedy these days.

I don't buy used games, but that still sucks.
-
They might as well go to the top of a hill and declare to the world 'WE ARE GREED MONEY HUNGRY BASTARDS, WE DON'T CARE ABOUT OUR CUSTOMERS, JUST FEED US MONEY!'
-
I like to loan my games to my friends. This could be an issue. I can also loan books to my friends, or a movie. But this idea would sops games from doing that.
-
As long as it doesnt affect Xbox, I don't freaking care.
-
Why is this a big deal?
-
really? all this can do is harm the industry, buying prequels is what gets millions hooked onto game series... especially in story driven games like MGS, Assasin's Creed, or even Portal! E.G. Oh look! a game series that has gone on for a while and now you're interested in getting into said complex story! Better start at the beginning right? But wait right -blam!- there Mr. "I don't wanna play games right when they come out"! you can't play the other games because we don't make them anymore , and we use this idiotic concept of 1 game per console/person! well that's just too -blam!- bad for you isn't it? it's obviously your fault that we've made it impossible for you to play previous installments right?
-
What if I want to bring a game round a friends? I think this will make them lose more money then they think it will make them gain...
-
Well that's retarded. Especially if it "bonds" with a single user - that will mean other users, even on the same console, can't use it at all. IMO, this is stupid. One thing of the great things about games is being social with them, not just trading in used games and buying them, but I mean borrowing a game or lending a game from/to a friend, which this will stop. I rarely buy used games, and I rarely trade in old games, but borrowing them yeah, sure I do.
