So I unintentionally prevented a suicide today...

I guarantee atleast one person who reads that is probably saying "how can you unintentionally do that?" Well, I make the story short. Today was a good day for me, and I was on the sidewalk talking with my friend, I then see this cute girl and since I'm in a good mood I shoot a compliment, and keep walking. Me and my friend get chipotle and he goes home. I'm walking back to my house and I see this girl again. Once again I say hello and we just had a nice conversation, nothing special. Eventually as I'm walking away I randomly think of a question to ask, out of the blue. So I go back and was like "can I ask you a really random question?" And she said yes, and then I proceeded to say "Are you happy" and by the face she made I knew where this was going. But she never said she wasn't, I continued being nice just because I'm a nice guy. At the end of all of this I get up from the chairs she had in front of her house and she tells me that If I hadn't came by, and shown her that people in the world are nice and caring that she would have killed herself because her life has been going down for about two years straight. And I stayed with her and talked for about 2 hours and made her as happy as one could make a person, and she asked for my number so she could call me if she needed help. I said no, and told her that if a complete stranger would take enough time to sit down and talk, imagine what a person who loves you would do. Also because I wouldn't allow her to "rely" on me in a sense, and she totally agreed. And just to make sure I asked her who she trusted the most, and stayed until they started talking , just to make sure nothing went wrong. So what do you make of that?

 • I think it's interesting (good interesting) that you rejected her number. I mean, look what you did. You let her unload whatever she was feeling onto a perfect stranger that she never has to talk to again. I've known people who've wanted that before, and what a boon it would be. Keeping in contact would only make her feel weak. Good on you.

 • Ignore the trolls OP, that was a very nice thing you did, society could use more people like you. But I have to ask, what's a considerate, nice person doing on a place like the Flood?

 • Only bad this is that you rejected her number, and in saying that I'm not meaning that in the way you think. OP, you went out of your way and helped someone by just being yourself, something that people can only wish to be able to do. You had an offer of a life time, to keep in touch with someone you've helped, and you denied it. What if things go wrong and she doesn't have anyone to communicate her feelings with? It might not have felt right, but you still should have taken it for whatever reason. [Edited on 12.10.2012 12:31 AM PST]

 • You're a good person, OP :3 It's a good feeling when you know you've helped someone who was in hard times. I've actually helped a friend of mine cope with depression before as well and it felt very good just knowing that I helped. Sometimes, people simply just need a reminder that there's good in the world and that people care about each other, even if they don't know even know each other. [Edited on 12.10.2012 12:29 AM PST]

 • I don't get any of it. No matter how bad my life gets I would still never kill myself, people don't seem to understand once you are dead you don't just no longer feel sadness, you don't exist and will also never feel any kind of joy again. If your not homeless or getting beat, and have atleast one person who cares for you, it's not bad. Some people are suicidal for stupid reasons and don't even understand the full extent of what they are doing and what they are wasting. These suicidal teens are not war vets, and need a good slap across the face and a few good pictures of starving kids in africa shoved down their throat, not our pity.

 •
Posted by: Good News
Posted by: NICE fap fap fap I don't get it, we need more people like op? What we need is less people who are so tied up in their stupid problems they want to comit suicide, we live in a first world country. If one person being nice to you is enough for you to be like "uhh welp, not want suicide no more" your doing it wrong and deserve to get deported so some poor mexican kid can take your place.
We need less people like you.

I have to say good luck with this one. Our society is so based on money and Tim restraints its no doubt people are stressed to the max. That's the thing too though it might be preventable to some who show signs. The majority never do and when you see them you think their just having a bad day wait a week it's too late an their gone. Sadly most people feel trapped and you would be surprised what one persons comments can do. If they can cause people to commit, then why wouldn't it save them? But once it does happen to someone you know I think you'll be more understanding. I used to think people who do this are quite selfish, I was quite wrong in a sense.
According to psychological studies, the girl in the OP was not very likely to actually go through with the act. Most who succeed in their attempts do not reach out to anyone before they go through with the act, let alone a random stranger. Still, it was nice of the OP to reach out to a random individual who, at the very least, is very depressed.
