Machinima IGA-Do you think Halo 4 deserves game of the year?

Did Halo 4 deserve game of the year? I don't understand all the praise going toward Halo 4. I find myself playing 3 or Reach more often than 4. What do you think? Did you vote? Do you think 343 did a good job as a new studio? As a previous Halo player, what did you think about the campaign, multiplayer, and spartan ops?

  •
Posted by: Wolverfrog I haven't played any better games this year.
Journey, Spec Ops: The Line, Mass Effect 3, Dark Souls Prepare To Die (kinda doesn't count though), Xcom: Enemy Unknown, The Walking Dead... I'm forgetting a couple though. EDIT: Basically what I'm saying is that Journey should win every GOTY award. [Edited on 12.12.2012 8:16 PM PST]

  • Halo 4 is great. They just need to add option in Match Making "Prefer Good Connection". Halo 4, you seem to be playing many games with people all over the world, which equals laggy game. A "Prefer Good Connection", like we had in REACH, fixes this problem. Halo 4 sometimes feel like im playing Halo 2 very laggy games.

Journey is my game of the year. Halo 4 takes a runner up spot. 343 did a fantastic job, but Journey was probably the nearest to perfection a video game has gotten in... Ever.

  • Dishonored is my Game of the Year. So refreshing to play in a new, unique universe backed up with awesome gameplay, art direction, writing and level design. Loved every minute of it.

  •
Posted by: ajw34307
Posted by: the real Janaka Halo 4 is far from objectively the best game of the year, it did nothing revolutionary or better than its predecessors. It did not define 2012 in gaming.
Why does a game have to be revolutionary to be 'objectively' GOTY material? Halo has always stuck to its roots while building on its own solid foundations, Halo 4 is no different.
You quoted two of my sentences. The first one stated that Halo 4 didn't do anything revolutionary and that it didn't do anything better than its predecessors. Where in that sentence did I imply that a game needed to be revolutionary to be the best game of the year?* I merely wrote so to underline how little Halo 4 did, and after the comma, that it didn't even do anything better than its predecessors. The sentence was meant to state my point that Halo 4 certainly isn't an uncontested winner of the best game of 2012. *I should however have been clearer since this after all is a thread about GOTY... :S
As for what it did better than its predecessors, that's entirely subjective. From my point of view, it told the best story since ODST and was interweaved with the universe as a whole better than any of the other games in the series.
It is subjective, that's what I tried to underline by writing it in italic. The sentence was built to counter the argument-or potential agrgument--that Halo 4 was an uncontested winner as some people believe.
There is no game which can 'define' a year in gaming. There are so many genres, themes, mechanics (etc) covered by so many games, there is and never will be a single one which defines a year's worth of releases.
I'd say that it can. You're one hundred procent right that one has to take genre and intent into consideration, but there is always the chance of something living up to its potential way more/better than everything that surrounds it. A product that does so defines its time. There usaully is one for every niche, every year. My feelings for Halo 4--ouside of my belief that it isn't Halo anymore--is a combination of it not being able to outshine its competition and in the field where it does, it's worse than its predecessors, i.e the music was better elsewhere, so was the story, atmosphere and level design, and even if its core gameplay was better than this years shooters, it was worse than Halo 1,2,3, Reach. • All I'm saying is they're lucky Far Cry wasn't in the running for it. Plus I'm surprised Borderlands didn't get it.

  • Exactly. Halo 4 was the best game during this year, only because their were no better games.

  • There are many awards, not everyone agrees Halo 4 deserves the title. Some think Journey does, some The Walking Dead, some Fez, and some even Skrillex Quest...
