I just wrote a police officer a ticket

So today I saw a police officer parked in a yellow "no parking zone" But he wasn't responding to an emergency, He was at a 7-11 and he walked out with a big gulp. He was abusing his status as a police officer. And this is how I am about to knock him down a level for it. I live in Oregon. In Oregon it is a little known fact that you don't have to be a police officer, or a parking attendant to write someone a parking ticket. See ORS 153.058 Now back to the story. as the officer was coming out as soon as I saw that he was parked illegally I took a picture of him ( as he was coming out holding his big gulp, and of his car parked illegally. AND of him getting into his car. This is all of the evidence that I need to issue him a citation. I went on down to the police station and initiated the proceedings of filing the citation. Filled out his ticket, and took it down to the court house as per the instructions. At the courthouse I gave the nearly-finished ticket to the clerk who found an available court date. And then signed the ticket. And took an oath that the information was correct. This police officer is now going to receive the ticket in the mail with his court date. I will also be going to this court date where I will be presenting the photographic evidence of his illegal parking. He will have no excuse. tl;dr I wrote a police officer a ticket, and now he must appear in court. UPDATE: 500 replies w00t, I will be posting the pictures AFTER the court date. Due to legal/security reasons. [Edited on 11.18.2012 6:31 PM PST]
that's hardly the point.
So what really is the point? That an officer of the law has to be accountable to it when they don't follow it?
if that officer is needed while he's in court a more serious crime could be committed that a petty parking offence. yes, there are other officers that could take his place but the fact is, less officers on the street = less protection for the public.

 • There is one thing I don't understand. Why, If you saw him. Did you not go up and simply remind him that he wasn't allowed to park there? Logic=fail

 • TIL that holding the people who enforce the law accountable to the laws they enforce is a bad thing. Thank you, Flood.

 •
Posted by: TheMouthOfSauron A friend of mine attempted a civilian arrest a couple of months ago; a cop was going about twenty miles over the speed limit, so my friend followed him and pulled him over. The office then handcuffed him and sternly talked to him for about fifteen minutes. And relatively recently, said officer apparently killed a man using excessive force.
I blame your friend for setting off a chain reaction which began with a night of binge drinking leading to alcoholism which destroyed his marriage and career, ostracized his friends and children from him, and sent him spiraling into a pit of depression and anxiety ultimately culminating in the beating of a suspect.

You're painting yourself as more of a bad guy as you continue to post, OP. It is unnecessary.

 • No excuse for the officer, he parked in an off-limits area with no real emergency occurring. I applaud the OP, not because I think he is some anti-police badass, but because he helps keep those who make us follow the laws accountable for the law.

 •
Posted by: funkbrotha10
Posted by: Master Chef OP, let us imagine you were on your lunch break from work. 7-11 has slurpees, and you won't be stopped, because we all crave a slurpee every now and again. You park your car inside the striped "no park zone," but nobody is around, or even parked at the 7-11. You're not disrupting the peace, or anything, and this will be a two-minute affair; three if the cashier takes his time. You glance outside after paying the cashier, and a cop is writing up a ticket. You've been parked for no more than 200 seconds. I'd be furious, and you're hard pressed to tell me you wouldn't be, OP; even to make the point that you have convictions and "the law is the law." What I'm saying, OP, is you are being that cop. This guy was at work, taking a short break, and going back to his business. Forget your vendetta against corruption; this guy will get your message loud and clear even if you don't show up in court. Don't be a jerk. It applies here, and should elsewhere.
I would certainly not be upset for getting a ticket because I knowingly and willingly parked in a no parking zone. How could I be? it would be 100% my fault.completely preventable. and based off of my lazy unwillingness to park and walk half a block.
And this is the part where I thought you might be unreasonable. I live in Portland, Oregon. This state doesn't come close to Chicago or Boston with congested traffic. Most of the state is pretty suburban, at that. To say you found a convenience store where this officer was endangering the public or himself by his actions is absurd. Laws exist, but following them without a second thought is just as dangerous as being naive or ignorant of them.

 • Win! I like police officers but I don't like the ones that believe they are above the law. Hopefully that will open his eyes a little bit. [Edited on 11.18.2012 12:21 AM PST]
