Like, does the future of their company rely so heavily on destiny or do they have some cushion?
-
They have been working on it for years now. If destiny fails then I personally may surrender.

There is never a "cushion". Not knowing the specifics of the agreement with Activision, we don't know if the game(s) need to reach a certain score on Metacritic, need to sell so many copies, etc. What makes or breaks Bungie are the people who work there. If they, for an instant, think that what they're doing is the greatest thing ever, then it won't be. And if that's the case then fans will stop buying their games. Bungie can last forever, so long as they continue to innovate and keep from becoming complacent. And do you know what keeps them going? We do. If it weren't for the fans cheering them on, or letting them know what they've done wrong, that'll be just what happens.

After dropping Halo, yes, Destiny is make or break. If they fail in launching their new IP (which I doubt they will) it will be hard for them to stay on their feet as a competitive developer.

Bungie has already made it.......yo

I would be surprised if they didn't have some sort of plan for if Destiny 1 didn't do great sales-wise (which should really be nigh improbable); however, if they don't, I would pretty much say that it'd be Realtime Worlds all over again. [Edited on 11.05.2012 5:17 PM PST]

I don't doubt there ability to make another great game, but this is there chance to prove to the entire industry that Halo wasn't a one hit wonder. So yes it is make or break for Bungie. imo. [Edited on 11.05.2012 5:15 PM PST]

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: After Reach? -blam!- yeah it's make or break.
-
Make or break... possibly. Do they have a cushion? Not really. But Bungie failing is not going to happen. They have a super talented team with a huge amount of experience behind them, and have enough time for pre-production to iron out an amazing universe. Plus they don't have a bunch of rabid fans that will scrutinize every single feature comparing it to previous iterations. Why? Because there are no previous iterations of Destiny to compare the first to. We are still a bunch of rabid fans... but everything we see will be a new excitement to us. We will have little bias.

I don't think it will be make or break. It certainly wouldn't be a good thing though if they happen to fall short of expectations.

Well since they are a studio that makes a game every three years (two after Destiny) having Destiny flop would be bad news for them. Since their studio has a considerable reputation, plus the advertising that Activision will put into the game it should sell pretty well. Personally I have faith that it will be as great as the hype and they will have another massively popular franchise on their hands.

Yes. That's like asking if Empire Strikes Back was make or break. ©

Don't doubt Bungie!

If they hype the hell up out of Destiny and fall short, it will probably hurt.
