The Earth would also fly off at a tangent away from the sun as the sun is exploding outwards due to its immense pressure and you'd have to do some calculations to see if the sun's plasma would reach the Earth and kill us as well. This could be an interesting question for xkcd's "What-if?" blog.

I don't know where people got that idea.[/quote]He's technically right He'll be flung off the earth with the atmosphere because he'll be moving at the same linear speed that the earth is at that point but now in a straight line because gravity is no longer providing a centripetal force.
