Boy Scout Finishes Eagle Scout Project

Is denied Eagle Scout rank and kicked out of Scouts because he is -blam!-. He built a tolerance wall for his school, a mural with supportive messages from fellow students. As a fellow Eagle Scout, I feel ashamed of the organization.

 • I never cared much for the boy scouts. I'm sure they're several perks that make worth while. But being a boy scout for 20 years seems a little out of sorts.

 •
Posted by: T21095 That's pretty sad. He'll probably get it due to all of the backlash the Scouts are going to receive.
No he won't. This isn't the first time this has happened. As a private organization- the BSA is allowed to do such a thing with out legal ramifications.

 • Boy scouts should punish that officer who told the kid he could do it when he was -blam!-. Nevertheless, BSA is a Christian organization and we live in a free country - they can due as they please; but the CO should not have told the kid he would become an eagle and encourage him if the answer was no.

 • Poor guy. Receiving your Eagle rank is about being recognized for all the hard-work and service a scout has done. The fact that he isn't straight shouldn't even come into play....

 •
Posted by: Snyder Pyder
Posted by: coolmike699
Posted by: Snyder Pyder The same argument used to also apply to -blam!-s in the military. People got upset when they got kicked out for being -blam!-, but you can't really say you were treated unfairly when you knew the rule was on the books before you joined. What argument could you present to a court of law? "I wasn't allowed to continue to dupe the system!"
Um... the argument is that the system was wrong. Take a look at this article right here. It's about a bunch of people who got scammed out of their money by a man pretending to be looking for fake bills. And it's a perfect example of why you shouldn't just blindly follow authority without a good reason. You can say that -blam!-s in the military were being treated unfairly because they were kicked out for expressing their identity, and no other reason. Just because you know the rule doesn't mean the rule is fair, or makes any sense at all.
"The system is wrong, and I shouldn't have to comply with all the rules of this organization to be awarded it's highest honor." Maybe it's just me, but that argument doesn't seem any better. And are you really trying to draw a parallel between an amature con artist who would've been foiled if anyone had asked to see his badge and a set of established rules that, whether you find them appropriate or not, are the standard for achieving an award in a private organization? Hey, if I join the boy scouts, can I get the trophy or whatever it is that says I'm an Eagle Scout as soon as I show up? 'Cause your argument seems to be that if I don't agree with some rules I don't have to follow them, but should still be treated like I am.
My argument is that some rules are completely baseless, and they are in place for no good reason. Having to complete a program to receive an award has a perfectly reasonable basis. Being denied an award because of your -blam!-ity is completely baseless.

 • Well, if they did know about his orientation and allowed him to continue then he can file a lawsuit and win automatically.

 • I'm an Eagle Scout myself. While I do not condone what the BSA did to this kid, he should have stayed quiet about his orientation until after he turned 18 and was no longer under BSA jurisdiction. Many Eagle Scouts in my troop did that and are currently enjoying both Eagle Scout status and maintaining their orientation. Just a bad move on the kids part. Shame he didn't get what he deserved though.

 • Eagle Scout here. I don't understand what he expected... He knew the rules of the organization, somehow still wanted to be a part of it, broke the rules, and then gets upset when he gets denied the rank award? Whether or not the organization's rules are 'morally correct,' you can't go against them and expect to be rewarded. And this goes for any kind of exclusive organization.

 • What I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around is... How do they know the kid was ghey? I'm pretty sure the rule "Don't ask, don't tell" applies in the Scouts. It's his fault he got kicked out.

But you do bring up a good point. Considering there are both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, ghey people should make their own Boy Scouts for gheys, or an organization that welcomes all.
Or the Boy Scouts could just be, you know, tolerant. It amazes me how you never see a problem with a -blam!- in the Girl Scouts. And as I said.... Cut their damn funding.

 • It's not a surprise. The Boy Scouts are a bigoted organization who, while well within their rights to discriminate against -blam!- people, are terrible people for doing so.

 •
Posted by: Unanimate Objec One of the Scout rules is that you have to be straight, so I don't understand how he was in it for so long (unless he hid it). If he did hide it, it would've been in his best interest to keep it hidden until he was done with scouts. It's kind of a low blow that the scout master knew about it for a while, and still let him work and finish it then inform him he couldn't get promoted. I agree with the BSA's rules and principles, but I'm still unsure about how I should react to this situation.
Then cut their damn federal and state funding. If they want to discriminate, they can do it with their own money, Not mine.
