If a baseball and bat cost $110...

..and the bat is $100 more than the ball, how much does the ball cost? According to research, if you answered $10, then you're more inclined to be a person of faith.
Your answer to the following riddle can predict whether you are a believer in religion or a disbeliever: Q: If a baseball and bat cost $110, and the bat costs $100 more than the ball, how much does the ball cost? A: If you answered $10 you are inclined to believe in religion. If you answered $5 you are inclined to disbelieve. Why? Because, according to new research reported in tomorrow's issue of the journal Science, the $10 answer indicates that you are an intuitive thinker, and the $5 answer indicates that you solve problems analytically, rather than following your gut instinct.
[link] Thoughts?

 • Whoever came up with the faith thing is an idiot. At first glance I thought it was 10 but then I actually read it thoroughly.

 • SHHHHHHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHhhhhshhshshsshhhhhhh continue this in a private talk if you would like to continue and dude you think the old testamate is false but still believe in the new one? what? sorry just couldnt get over that. People will find just about any excuse to dress up religious discussion (like this thread) so they can get away with bashing it.
I'm not even going to dress it up. Religion is illogical. Religious texts are no different than books of fairy tales, but for grown ups. It doesn't teach logical, rational thinking. Talking snakes? Burning bushes? Parting entire seas? Millions of animals on a boat during a world-wide flood? Suuurre... I don't care if you're a person of faith; it doesn't bother me. You're more than welcome to practice your religious routines at home, and even in public. But as soon as you start stepping on the toes of others [namely those who aren't people of faith], it's a problem. Don't tell me I'm going to hell for not believing in your deity. That's like a hippie telling me he's going to punch me in my aura; it's not a threat. Even if there was a heaven and hell - if I have to behave a particular way in order to get in, it's flawed. You shouldn't be a good person because you want to go to heave. You should be a good person because it's the right thing to do for humanity. I wish more religious people would speak out against those people and groups who use religion as their foundation of hatred. I haven't met one LGBT person who goes to church anymore because nobody wants them, and they're more than willing to make them feel unwelcome. Isn't that the exact OPPOSITE of what the Bible teaches?
I don't think you're going to hell for not believing in God. I think anyone can, and that's a misconception/generalisation that very much annoys me. Equally, being a Christian =/= going to heaven. The old testament is only taken LITERALLY by small groups of Evangelists. No Christian I know (myself included) believe anything in the old testament to be more than story. At the end of the day, you have to remember that the bible was written by human beings, who are very much fallible creatures by their nature. I could go on, I really don't hate Atheists or any non-christian (having been an atheist/agnostic for a long time myself.) It seems like, if anyone, you're the one that has an issue with tolerance.
I meant the "dressing up religious discussion" and "bashing it" to be two separate entities. They often coincide, but not necessarily.

 •
Posted by: THC Tango That has to be coincidental; the two have no relationship whatsoever.
Depends on how you view it. Religious people are, obviously, going off gut instinct and faith. The $10 answer is based off a gut reaction to the question. Athiests are generally analytical and question how and why God could exist. The $5 answer requires a little bit more than instinct, but requires the answerer to think analytically. I can see it being true, in general, for a decent amount of people.

 •
Posted by: destroys u It could be interpreted in a way that implies that religious people are unthinking.
So it's offensive because people interpret it in a way that offends themselves. That's not really the studies fault that they've misinterpreted it. It says they are intuitive, not unthinking, or stupid.

How do you have an opinion about a math problem? Math doesn't really work off opinions.
He meant their religious views. (read the OP)
I did read the OP. The study is not saying anything bad about people having opinions. It's attempting to understand how people reach those opinions. Either through analytical thinking, more likely to say $5 for the ball, or through intuitive thinking, more likely to say $10. Basically to you go with your intuition, or do you analyse the problem before attempting to answer. They then did further study and found that people who are analytical thinkers are less likely to be religious. So therefore if the $5 answer shows you to be an analytical thinker, it could then be reasoned that answer would also indicate you are less likely to believe in religion. I guess I don't see how this is 'implying people are stupid for their opinions.'
It could be interpreted in a way that implies that religious people are unthinking.
