If you make a mistake, like being 18 drinking at a party next to a 17 year old, boom. Criminal record. Girlfriend sends you pic of her naked? Boom. Registered sex offender, work at Target for the rest of your life. The list goes on.
Is it me, or if a kid makes a mistake, the rest of his life if screwed over? Is this fair?
Posted by: Mereel N7 Examples were more of being stupid not mistakes... I came in here expecting this to be about school.
I just realized this... A long time ago, you'd be punished, and taught to not do it in the future.. Now you're punished by having your future taken away.
-
The expectations are much higher.

I have found as I've grown older that we're to harsh on small and insignificant crimes but too soft on completely terrible crimes.

Kids that learn to not make mistakes = Better society. People that drink underage or get girlfriends who are dumb enough to make underaged pr0nz = People who deserve it.

We had the older generation to do that.

In Britain if you do a minor crime under 16 it gets wiped the day you turn 16

Criminal record.
Well, first of all, at 18 you're not a kid anymore; you're an adult. Secondly, when has this ever happened? Pretty sure being in the vicinity of a minor isn't illegal.
My cousin, who is a good kid and 18 at the time, was drinking at a party in college, then a girl who was 17 but lied and said she was 18 came up to him and they were drinking and talking. The next day, she claimed she was r-a-ped by him. After he was found not guilty of -blam!-, he was still charged with "Corrupting the morals of a minor", put under house arrest for 6 weeks and then probation for five years. He just graduated, and the only reason he has a job is because a lot of people in our family work for the same big corporation and got him a job.
Oh wow.

This whole "the world sucks now and was obviously better in the 'good old days'" viewpoint is dumb and getting very tiring.
Posted by: Mr T Rollins At my school (middle/high), if someone walks up to you out of the blue and punches you in the face and breaks your nose, you, having done nothing to them, you will still get suspended.
Might as well pick up the -blam!- fight. If I'm gonna get suspended, the guy is going to go down with me.

It's very fair. It's illegal, we all know it is now, and anyone ignoring the law deserves the consequence. Especially underage drinking. That's inexcusable. It's like cigarettes now. People suffering from their effects today that started smoking in decades before we knew the harmful consequences are victims. But with all the data available and very visible today, anyone picking up a cigarette deserves what he gets.
