'We need to be more cautious about sex too,' says vice-chancellor of London Metropolitan University
A London university is considering establishing alcohol-free zones on its campuses because so many of its students consider drinking to be immoral.
Professor Malcolm Gillies, vice-chancellor of London Metropolitan University, said the selling of alcohol was an issue of "cultural sensitivity" at his institution where a fifth of students are Muslim.
Speaking to a conference of university administrators in Manchester, he said that for many students, drinking alcohol was "an immoral experience".
"Because there is no majority ethnic group [at London Metropolitan], I think [selling alcohol] is playing to particular parts of our society much more [than to others]," he was reported as saying in the Times Higher Education magazine.
He said he saw little reason for the university to subsidise a student bar on campus when there were "at least half a dozen pubs within 200m".
He told the Guardian the makeup of his institution had changed considerably over the past few decades. In the past it had been "substantially Anglo Saxon now 20% of our students are Muslim," he said.
"We therefore need to rethink how we cater for that 21st-century balance. For many students now, coming to university is not about having a big drinking experience. The university bar is not as used as it used to be."
Alcohol free zones doesn't sound that bad of an idea. The non-Muslim students can always drink elsewhere.
-
establishing "alcohol-free zones" =/= banning alcohol misleading title is misleading
-
I don't have a problem with banning alcohol. I do have a problem with banning it because it goes against someones religion and it hurts their feelings.

They would just go off campus.
Posted by: chubbz Maybe more students will focus more on studying instead of getting hammered on the weekends.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Posted by: mister death Ok? This doesn't affect me in he slightest. I don't think it should be aloud on campus anways.
What alcohol or sex?? The article mentioned both

First the cigarette pack labeling ban and now this. I feel sad for people who live in Oceania, I mean London.
-
What is the problem? Seriously my university is alcohol free, but that doesn't mean people break the rules all the time.

Good, but for the wrong reasons.
Posted by: BaldursGate1994
Posted by: evnted Why will they "bad" alcohol?
This. But also why is this a problem?
That the unvirsity is changing because of someones religion. They should not even be thinking this there is no reason to change, if those students don't like it they can go somewhere else. They are paying the university to go there its not like they are forced. The UK has changed enough to accomodate the different relgions and people, some ways I agree with and others I don't.
-
20% isn't a majority, if it inconveniences more people by closing then it's wrong. Maybe a student vote on it would suffice, it is only an on-campus bar after all, if there's plenty of bars nearby it isn't a big problem.

Doesn't matter, the mainland is scheduled to be invaded in exactly four months. By the time I've built up my forces and entered London all of England would have been burnt to the ground.

Damn dude, Islam is consuming Europe!
