so i bought one today, and with it came all the kite suff and some oil. supposing the gun is brand new, right out of the box is there anything i need to do to it to get it in working order other then put it together? do i need to put the oil in the gun?
also what makes a good paintball gun "good"? if i give you my exact paintball gun will you be able to tell me if it's good?
it is a tippman 98 custom

That's pretty much the generic paintball marker. First of all, you need to plop a drop of mineral oil on the receptor on the marker where the CO2 will plug into. Twist the CO2 tank and that's pretty much it for the first time. After that, you'll need to learn how to properly open the marker up and clean it, especially when a ball bursts in it, which they will, because you have a 98 custom.

I would to do more paintballing but it's just so expensive
Posted by: Psuedo The amount of money some people spend on these is ridiculous.
back when I did tournaments I'd be going through almost $300 of paint alone every week. It gets crazy expensive, luckily the team eventually got a sponsor from draxxus and nelson so it cut down the paint costs. Between that and my DM4 I bought new (that's how long ago this was lol) new proto mask, barrel set, nitro tanks, back up Ion and barrels for that. I had almost 3k in just guns and accessories alone.

They're illegal here. :(

yeah I had a couple grand in my set up back in the day and that was with some parts free from tippman to make my A-5 cycle faster for tournament play
Posted by: Psuedo The amount of money some people spend on these is ridiculous.
Good starter gun, and you can very easily customize them to make them really good, e-triggers and boards, barrels, loader mod. I generally just clean the gun after every time I play, and the only thing I do pregame is just put a tiny bit of oil on the bolt. Tippmans are built to last, I have a friend of mine who has never cleaned/oiled his gun in the 8 years we've played, still works like new.

like someone mentioned keep an extra ball detent and just put a few drops of oil in it before you screw in your air tank and it should last a long time I was on a tippman team once great guns underrated they shoot straight as hell

ummm in florida? haha it's just for fun

You have a great go to start out with. You don't want to oil the gun too much. If you do it will cause the o-rings to become loose. Mainly the bolt o-ring. The main problem you will have will be with the ball detent and the bolt o-ring. They are very cheap and very easy to replace when they go out. Also over time your sear will be worn down and it will start sputtering when you shoot it, oiling it is a quick fix. Source: Fixed 1000+ Also, if you want to upgrade I recommend an A-5 or X7. If you want a speedball gun then a good one to start with is an invent mini.
-
OP, where will you be playing?
-
What makes it "good": -price -reliability -adaptability (customization, upgrades, etc.) That would also include whatever attachments you put on it, such as a hopper with anti-chop tech, which is somewhat a must-have. I'm assuming that you'll want to just play instead of look like a pro so you can pretty much ignore those kinds of posts. [Edited on 02.22.2012 8:35 PM PST]

I have a Carver One with a 20" barrel, best gun I've ever had.
Posted by: Reloc You have a very good paintball gun in my opinion.
Not when you start comparing it to other markers, like Eteks or Dyes. [Edited on 02.22.2012 8:33 PM PST]

You have a very good paintball gun in my opinion. Shoots pretty straight, just take care of it and it will last you years. Just do whatever the instructions say.

Tippman 98 customs are not top of the line. They're pretty basic. But they're damn durable and they'll last forever. They'll do just fine for recreational play. You can upgrade the crap out of them, too. You won't need to oil it for a long time. Also, it's a marker, not a gun. [Edited on 02.22.2012 8:38 PM PST]
