Shadow's guide to (Internet) Myths! Farewell Flood!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE!!! The myth thread is now complete. I have finished what I set out to do and am now moving on. To read the final myth and a farewell please click here. Thanks for the many memories and I wish you all the best in your lives. - Love Shadow

I have always been extremely interested in Myths, Legends and Hoaxes occurring in real life and the Internet. This thread is here as a "library" of the major internet Legends and Myths. Please, if I'm missing any, reply with some information on the subject and I will add it to the OP along with your name. If you see any mistakes, please inform me! Also, the reason I have Internet in brackets in the OP is because this thread will FOCUS on Internet myths but not be restricted to them. Basically, any myth (real life or internet) is allowed. Also, if this gets popular I MAY need a second OP. But we'll see. Anyway, let's get into it.

Subject: #001: The Slender Man Alright, I've picked one of the most well-known celebrities on the Flood as our first subject. The Slender Man! Oh and what a subject he is. About the Slenderman: Slenderman (also known as "Slendy" or "TheSlenderMan") is a mythical creature that appeared on the internet about 2009. He was conjured up at the SomethingAwful.com forums by a member named Victor Surge for a Photoshop competition. He is depicted to be tall and thin (hence the Slender), wearing a black suit and having an emotionless, blank face. Victor entered the competition on June 10th, 2009 (the day the world was introduced to Slendy). He (Victor) had stated that Slenderman was a creature who stalked little children. Slenderman didn't really rise to fame until the 24th of June (2009) when the infamous 4Chan caught its scent and it's paranormal (/x/) board took a massive liking to Slendy. Still, even with 4chan knowing about Slendy you wouldn't really call him a massive internet star just yet. But, then came the MarbleHornets Project. On June 20th (before Slendy came to 4chan)a mysterious video aired on youtube. This video was called theMarble Hornets entries. "MarbleHornets" started hosting videos called "entries" which claimed to be taped segments retrieved by someone named "Jay" (or also "J"), and contained footage of a friend that had since disappeared. Then the /x/ board found the videos and they got incredibly famous and so did Slendy. He has become, what I call, an "Internet Sensation". He has been featured on many sites (including this one; see Top Forum Topic by Lt Sartor). After the videos got famous random people started posting their experiences with Slendy. A lot of pictures started showing up and basically, the internet both loved and feared the infamous SlenderMan. It has later become clear that the videos are fake and it was created by two film students (who were also SomethingAwful users) as part of an ARG. But users still watch the entries regardless, possibly hoping that this mythological beast is real. Slender Man Gallery: Here is Slenderman having some fun with the local kids. Here he is with some more victims... errm... kids... And here is some amazing artwork of Slendy. Shadow's Verdict: Real or fake, I think it is safe to say most of the internet (at least the forum side of the internet) knows Slendy by now. And 90% of us love and are fascinated by him. Regardless of the fact that he creeps most us out. But, I'm going to call FAKE on this one. Simply because of the fact that before the SomethingAwful competition there was absolutely no trace of Slendy anywhere. No experiences, no pictures. It is just all too made up. All the pictures I have seen are either extremely photoshopped or Artwork. So, my final verdict for the infamous SlenderMan is FAKE. Now that I have said that I am most likely going to get Slenderly love in the middle of the night from a tall suited man, but oh well. That's the price of the internet. Regardless, Slenderman has captivated and fascinated my imagination for a year now and it has been a lot of fun researching into the myth. Also, this thread needs credit for opening Bungie.net's mind to Slendy! Subject #001 Complete.

Subject #002: Lavender Town Lavender Town is only really known to the most dedicated Pokemon or game forums. I wouldn't call it famous but it definitely has a reputation around these parts. So, shall we get into it straight away? I think so. About Lavender Town: So, you may be wondering what Lavender Town is. Well, Lavender Town is essentially a little town in Pokemon Red and Green that was said to cause mass suicides in Teenagers ages 7 - 12. The actual town it self is quite normal. Just an average town in the world of Pokemon. What is different, however, is the town's purpose. It serves as the Kanto's (the world in Red and Green, I think? Correct me if I'm wrong! I know Hoenn is Ruby and Sapphire!) pokemon graveyard. It features it's own special Tower (filled with graves) and an eerie song. The Lavender Town Syndrome (also known as "Lavender Town Tone" or "Lavender Town Suicides" and "Lavender Town Conspiracy") made itself famous shortly after the games release (1996) because it was said to cause mass suicides or illness of children aged from 7 - 12 years old. The reason of this was said to be listening to the original Lavender Town theme (check the subject's gallery for videos and pictures!) One video, which showed on Youtube on July 26th, 2010, appeared to have software that would actually analyse the LT theme and convert them into images. Pictures at the end of the song seemed to resemble the pokemon Unown. What is so strange about this is the fact that Unown didn't appear in generation one pokemon (Red and Green) and actually made it's appearance in Generation Two. Another strange thing that appears to be in Lavender Town is a couple of extra things. A "White Hand" sprite. A "Ghost Animation". And a model named the "Buried Alive Model". There is no known pictures of the BA Model but it has appeared in several copy-pasta's of the LTS. The White Hand Sprite: Known as WhiteHand.gif, this was meant to appear as a pokemon on the third level of the Lavender Tower. It has four different animation; Introduction, Idle and two attacks. The attacks are known as "Fist" and "Brutal". Fist is basically just a punch. But the Brutal animation is missing several frames, apparently. It has been said to "Open up" and then it just cut's out. After that it appear's closed up again. There has been no record of the missing frames as of the time of this writing. The White Hand is depicted as a decaying, shriveled up White hand. The Ghost Animation: Coded as Haunting.swf, the ghost animation was coded to appear in several places in the tower. Many people believe it is just a background feature as you can not interact with it. It has 59 frames in total. Half of these frames appear to be the normal Pokemon Ghost model. About a quarter of these frames appear to be static to create a fading out effect. The rest, strangely, appear to be screaming faces, a "Grim Reaper" style thing and corpses. Programmer Hisashi Sogabe has said that he has "No knowledge as to where the images surfaced". Not much else is known about TGA. The Buried Alive Model: Known as the Buryman script, the BA model was to be the boss on top of the Lavender Town Tower. He was replaced by the ghost of a Marowak. Once arriving on top of the tower, the player would have this conversation with the Buryman: Buried Alive: You're... Here. BA: I'm trapped... BA: And I'm lonely... BA: So very lonely... BA: Won't you join me? After this, a battle would be initiated. Once in "BattleMode" the model would appear to be a decaying human corpse trying to crawl out of the ground. It was programmed to have two White Hands, a Gengar and a Muk. No script was written if you defeated the BA Model. The game-boy would just... freeze. Although, if you lost against the Buried Alive model then he would say something along the lines of "Finally, Fresh meat" followed by several lines of gibberish. He then dragged the character into the ground with him. Then "Game Over" would be displayed. But in the background the BA Model would be devouring the character. Apparently though, the file downloaded itself into the actual gameboy. So that when you turned on your GB you would view the Game Over image and the sound file staticmesh.wav was played. But anyway, Lavender Town is filled with creepyness. You may not realize it as you play through again soon but Lavender Town may have actually been the cause of many child suicides in 1996. Kinda makes you feel sick, doesn't it? Apparently though, the reason for the suicides were the theme song and that song alone. It is said that kids and young teenagers can actually hear different sounds in the music.

If anyone has any suggestions for Myths I could do/research I would be happy to do just that! Just reply with the name of the myth or legend and I'll get straight on it. - Shadow [Edited on 04.08.2012 12:46 AM PDT]

 • "this man" seems a bit scary. I hope I don't dream about him! haha, that would freak me out. Anyway, some spooky pasta to investigate? How about Global Warming? and how its meant to "end the world" haha. Just a joke... Anyway, a neat little myth though. In England, a small place called Cromar I think it is... Theres this black dog that keeps walking across the road or something. Anyway, its not an internet thing because it was around before the internet (yes, before the internet!). Anyway, it would be a neat thing to look into. Sorry its Norfork not Cromar, or whatever it's called. Anyway, dates back 100 years or something so would kind of be interesting. I know when I was there a few years back I had a search for this ghost dog haha. [Edited on 12.02.2011 2:21 AM PST]

 • Damn. I believe in this man too. I think that it is a genetic memory thing, like people are sometimes scarred of the dark/night because our ancesters would have learnt that some predators are nocturnal. I belive it because as soon as I saw the topic the man came into my head, with a pinky yellowy backround. If you don't believe me I don't care but I just wanted people to know.

 • Subject Post #18: Ever Dream This Man? Hello there, Shadow here with another myth. This time I am proud to say I am doing a real life myth and I sincerely hope I have enough room in this 10,000 character post to fit all the information I had planned to fit in. The real life myth in question is the "Ever Dream This Man" (go to Gallery for a link to the website) and essentially what it is is a kind of strange happening in which many people across the globe have dreamed an identical man. Spooky, eh? This myth has been brought up a lot in the thread since it was born and I realized what better time to analyse it then now when the thread is struggling to find new myths. That's right! There is no better time. So, from the bottom of my heart, I wish you the very best in reading this myth and I thank you for sticking with me over the past three months. I am proud to have made most of you the mythians you are now. History: The whole myth started in 2006 when a female came to her psychiatrist asking for assistance with her dreams. She, basically, explained to the doctor that she had been seeing "this man" (as she referred to him) as a frequent guest in most of her dreams. She drew a portrait for the doctor too. "This man", allegedly, helped said female with her private life. It is also important to note that the female in question said that she had never met the man in real life before. A couple days/weeks later another patient of the psychiatrist noticed the portrait and explained to the doctor that he too has been visited by the same man in his dreams. He, too, referred to the man as "this man". The doctor decided to send the portrait to a couple of colleagues to see what information he could gather. What he did gather startled even himself. His colleagues had found another two instances of people meeting "this man" in their dreams. Since then, January 2006, there have been several thousand confirmed sightings of "this man" in peoples dreams. These people have no pattern or anything. They are of different origins, different skin tones, different cities, different everything. There is no clear indicator as to what may be going on here in the minds of citizens across the globe in terms of "this man". This is truly one of the spookiest myths ever conceived or one of the greatest hoaxes ever concocted. Theories: There are quite a lot of different theories as to what "this man" symbolizes. Religious, Conspiracy and Scientific theories are plentiful whilst other less believable theories are just as present (IE; The Aliens, man!). There are, however, five main theories conceived by professionals to try to better understand "this man". Archetype Theory: This theory is basically the theory that this man is an image belonging to the collective subconscious of all human beings. Basically, what is says is that when humans are hard pressed (IE; Scared, Angry, Dissapointed, Clueless) then "this man" will appear in their dreams as a "blank" slate for a human being to offer assistance and advice. Basically, he is a blank human AI being apparition style thing. Religious Theory: This theory says that "this man" is one of the many manifestations of the Lord himself. Religious experts say God appears in dreams of his followers as "this man" to offer advice and mental support. Dream Surfer Theory: This theory is definitely the most interesting and controversial albeit has the lowest scientific credibility too. Basically, it implies that a man in real life has the power to teleport or manifest himself in other peoples dreams. There are sub-theories to this theory such as funding from big corporations (IE conspiracy). It is commonly thought that the man may look like the image in real life but it is also thought that he may look entirely different. Dream Imitation Theory: Personally, what I believe is the most believable theory; is that essentially what started with one person has developed onto more people through the form of imitation. People become so inspired by other peoples visions of "this man" that they begin to concoct him unintentionally in their dreams. Daytime Recognition Theory: This theory suggests that, because we do not exactly remember all the faces we dream, "this man" is the blank face that all human beings rely on as their fallback option if they do not remember the specified face within the dream. This Man: I will attempt to describe this man in my opinion. He appears to be balding in the middle of his cranium. He also has quite bushy eyebrows. His eyes are large and friendly. His nose is kind of large but also to scale with the rest of his face. His lips curve upwards to form a neutral smile implying that he is friendly. And his hair covers over the top half of his ears, too. He, overall, appears to have a friendly image in which he can obtain the trust and friendship of the person he is invading. His face would suggest he would be around the mid thirties, maybe early forties. His face appears to be quite normal and unoriginal. My Opinions: Personally, I believe this a real thing. I honestly do. Sure, there is no proof. But, I don't know, there just seems to be so many testaments and professional confirmations that it would be hard to dismiss such a myth so quickly. However, in having said that, I am a firm believer in the Dream Imitation Theory and that this man is a just part of people "spreading" him around. I don't believe he is the harbinger of death or anything like that as I'm not really a religious guy. Of course, the whole myth could be a massive hoax but it seems so well put together to not be real. Regardless, this was quite an interesting myth to research and also quite a spooky one for a change. I definitely do NOT want to run into this guy in my dreams. Hopefully, I won't. SHADOW'S VERDICT: = = = TRUE = = = Gallery: Website Portrait Portrait(S) Finale: Thanks for reading, guys. I hope you enjoyed this subject and learned a bit about "this man". I also hope you were significantly creeped out by it all. Stick around for more myths. <3 Shadow [Edited on 12.01.2011 5:08 AM PST]
